BJP to Initiate Nationwide Organisational Changes and Elect New President

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to initiate significant organisational transformations, starting with a new membership campaign, followed by internal elections across states, culminating in the selection of a new party president. This move comes as the tenure of the current president, J.P. Nadda, which was extended, is set to conclude on June 30. An amendment in the BJP's constitution now allows its highest decision-making body, the Parliamentary Board, to make decisions regarding the party president's term during emergency situations.

BJPs New Phase of Leadership

Insiders have hinted that the Parliamentary Board might prolong Nadda's tenure until his successor is elected. There is also speculation about the appointment of a working president in the interim period. The necessity for a new party leader has emerged following Nadda's induction into the Union Cabinet as the minister for health and chemicals and fertilisers.

The precedent set during Amit Shah's transition from BJP president to a cabinet position in 2019, when Nadda was appointed as working president before his full presidency in January 2020, suggests a similar approach could be adopted now. This strategy seems particularly pertinent as the party gears up for an extensive membership drive and internal elections, alongside preparing for upcoming assembly elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi.

Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision not to include Nadda in his second-term Cabinet hinted at Nadda's continued leadership over the BJP's organisational structure, the search for his replacement is complicated by the fact that many experienced leaders are currently serving in government roles. Figures like Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupender Yadav, previously considered potential candidates for the presidency, are part of Modi's third-term government.

The involvement of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of the BJP, in selecting the new president is also noteworthy. The RSS's input is expected to play a crucial role in this decision-making process. Additionally, shifts of some state BJP presidents to governmental roles and electoral challenges in states like Uttar Pradesh are likely to result in new leadership appointments within those regions.

For instance, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar has been appointed as a Union minister, while Bihar's Samrat Choudhary has become a deputy chief minister. Similarly, Nayab Singh Saini serves both as Haryana Chief Minister and state party head. In Rajasthan, changes are anticipated to address social coalition dynamics within the party leadership.

The need for organisational restructuring has become more pressing following the BJP's performance in recent elections. Despite losing its majority in the Lok Sabha, the party's alliance, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), managed to surpass the critical threshold of 272 seats. This development underscores the urgency of revitalising the party's structure and leadership ahead of future electoral challenges.
