BJP MLAs Call for Urgent Relief and Strategic Flood Management in Jammu Following Recent Flashfloods

Following severe flashfloods in Jammu, BJP MLAs have met with government officials to seek immediate relief for affected families and develop a long-term flood management strategy.

Following the recent flash floods in Jammu, a group of BJP MLAs met senior government officials to discuss immediate relief and long-term flood management strategies. The delegation included Sham Lal Sharma, Gharu Ram Bhagat, Vikram Randhawa, Yudhvir Sethi, Arvind Gupta, Mohan Lal Bhagat, and Surinder Kumar. They met with Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas, and Jammu Municipal Corporation Commissioner Devansh Yadav.

The meeting's primary focus was on ensuring swift relief for affected families and developing a long-term flood management plan. The MLAs conveyed the concerns of their constituents, emphasising the need to address both immediate challenges and structural issues that worsened the flood's impact. They highlighted the severe damage caused by the flash floods and heavy rainfall on August 24, which inundated many areas in Jammu district.

Flood Damage and Immediate Needs

The MLAs reported that floodwaters entered homes, causing significant damage to household items and belongings. This added to the distress of affected families. They called for a thorough assessment of damages suffered by households, traders, and farmers to arrange adequate compensation. The need for urgent relief and rehabilitation measures was stressed, with a focus on restoring civic amenities promptly.

They urged the administration to identify flood-prone areas across the district and implement structural improvements. Suggestions included creating proper drainage systems, functional flood channels, regular de-silting of streams, and modern storm-water drains. These measures are crucial not only for current relief but also to prevent future suffering.

Infrastructure Challenges and Health Concerns

The MLAs noted that lanes, pathways, and drains in several areas were washed away. Flood protection walls alongside roads were also damaged in many places, making vehicle movement difficult and disrupting daily life. They highlighted the urgent need for medical assistance in flood-affected areas to prevent waterborne disease outbreaks, especially in vulnerable regions.

The administration assured the delegation that damage assessment surveys have been prioritised. Relief materials and financial support are being provided to affected families. A comprehensive plan will be developed for proper channelisation and drainage systems in flood-prone areas to prevent future disasters.
