BJP Madhya Pradesh Chief: Hemant Khandelwal Set to Take Charge, Signals BJP’s Outreach to Vaishya Community
Hemant Khandelwal, a seasoned politician and two-time legislator from Betul, is poised to become the new president of the Madhya Pradesh BJP. His nomination was the only one submitted for the position at the party headquarters in Bhopal. The announcement of his unopposed election will be made soon, marking a significant shift in leadership within the party.
Khandelwal's political journey is deeply rooted in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) tradition. His father, Vijay Khandelwal, served as a BJP MP from Betul multiple times between 1996 and 2008. Hemant has previously held roles such as Betul district unit chief and state party treasurer. He currently leads the Kushabhau Thakre Trust.

Significance of Khandelwal's Appointment
The appointment of Khandelwal as state BJP chief is seen as a strategic move to strengthen ties with the Vaishya community. This community has been a loyal supporter of the party since its Bhartiya Jana Sangha days but lacks significant decision-making roles in several states. His leadership is expected to send positive signals to this voter base.
Khandelwal's rapport with senior BJP leaders, including current CM Dr Mohan Yadav and former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, further solidifies his position. During a 2008 by-election, Chouhan's support was instrumental in securing Khandelwal's victory by over 35,000 votes.
Breaking Long-Standing Trends
This development marks a departure from a 15-year trend where sitting MPs led the state's BJP organization. Previous presidents like VD Sharma and Rakesh Singh were all sitting MPs. Khandelwal will be only the fifth sitting MLA in 45 years to head the state party.
The last Vaishya community leader to head the MP BJP was Lakhiram Agrawal from 1990 to 1994. Khandelwal's election after 31 years is expected to empower grassroots workers who felt disconnected under previous leadership styles perceived as less accessible.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
Khandelwal will be following in the footsteps of notable leaders like Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who led the party for 263 days in 2005-06 while serving as an MP from Vidisha. His leadership could bring back focus on empowering grassroots workers within the party structure.
Political insiders suggest that a senior RSS leader from Madhya Pradesh may have played a role in both Dr Mohan Yadav's rise as CM and Khandelwal's new position. This leader reportedly has strong connections with top BJP figures in Delhi.
Khandelwal’s family also runs an educational institution and an agri-industrial cluster in Betul. The CM Rise School model introduced by Shivraj Singh Chouhan in 2022 was inspired by Khandelwal’s Samekit School model, showcasing his influence beyond politics.
