BJP's Lok Sabha Candidate List Under Fire for Lack of Women Representation
The Trinamool Congress has criticized the BJPs first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections for its low number of women candidates, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modis promises to empower women have not been fulfilled.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently announced its first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, sparking criticism from the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the low number of women candidates. The TMC pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promises to empower women have not been reflected in the party's actions.
TMC Highlights Disparity in Women's Representation
TMC leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen expressed concern over the gender imbalance in the BJP's candidate list. He noted that while the TMC has nominated at least 75% women for Rajya Sabha seats, the BJP's list includes only 14% women candidates. Sen criticized the BJP, led by Narendra Modi and J.P. Nadda, for their apparent disregard for women's empowerment.
BJP Defends Candidate Selection Process
In response to the criticism, BJP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya defended the party's candidate selection process. He described the list as "forward-looking" and "very balanced," emphasizing that it reflects the popularity and acceptability of the chosen leaders among the people of West Bengal. Bhattacharya expressed hope that the electorate would recognize and support the BJP's commitment to good governance, democracy, transparency, and opposition to the alleged atrocities, dictatorship, corruption, and appeasement policies of the TMC.
BJP State President Expresses Gratitude
BJP state president and Balurghat MP Sukanta Majumdar, who was re-nominated from the same Lok Sabha constituency, expressed his gratitude for the trust and support shown by the party leadership. He pledged to work tirelessly for the betterment of the nation.
As the Lok Sabha elections draw closer, the focus on candidate selection and representation continues to be a key issue. The BJP's announcement of its first list of candidates has sparked debate and criticism, particularly regarding the low number of women candidates. The TMC's concerns highlight the ongoing need for gender equality and women's empowerment in Indian politics.
