BJP's Suvendu Adhikari Alleges Non-IPS Officers in SP Positions Across West Bengal

In a recent development that has stirred the political waters of West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari raised concerns over the appointment of several non-Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to positions traditionally reserved for IPS officers, including the role of superintendents of police (SPs). Adhikari, serving as the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, directed his grievances towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) through a letter penned on Saturday.

Non-IPS Officers in SP Roles, Claims BJP Leader

Adhikari's allegations stem from a press note issued by the ECI on March 21, 2024, which mandates state governments to reassign non-encadred officers from their current roles as SP/SSP and to submit a compliance report forthwith. The press note, identified as Press Note No. ECI/PN/29/2024, underscores the exclusive designation of SP roles in districts for IPS officers. Highlighting this directive, Adhikari took to social media platform X to voice his concerns, attaching a list of 16 officers he claims are non-IPS yet occupy IPS-designated positions.

The West Bengal Police, however, has refuted these claims, labeling them as "false and misleading." In a statement, they assured that all appointments have been made in strict adherence to the procedural norms and rules laid out by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This rebuttal sets the stage for a potential standoff between state law enforcement authorities and political figures over the adherence to central directives concerning police appointments.

Adhikari's move to involve the ECI highlights an ongoing scrutiny over administrative appointments in West Bengal. With both sides presenting conflicting statements, the matter draws attention to the importance of maintaining transparency and adherence to established norms in public service appointments. As this situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the ECI will respond to Adhikari's call for action and what implications this may have for police administration in West Bengal.
