BJP Manifesto on Fishermen Families
The plan to uplift and advance the fisheries sector has been detailed in the 2024 election manifesto unveiled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The manifesto outlines several commitments aimed at modernizing fishing infrastructure, providing financial support, and facilitating skill development initiatives for fishermen.
Key points from the BJP's manifesto include:
1. Enhancement of Fisheries Initiatives: The BJP manifesto emphasizes the commitment to advance the prosperity and welfare of fishermen through initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. This includes modernizing infrastructure and providing support for skill development in the fisheries sector.
2. Expansion of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana: A central promise is the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana to increase fish production and boost annual seafood exports, thereby bolstering the fisheries sector's contribution to the economy.
3. Strengthening Insurance Coverage: The manifesto pledges to strengthen and expand insurance coverage under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana using technological interventions for quicker and more accurate assessment of claims.
4. Development of Production and Processing Clusters: Special attention will be given to women from coastal communities in developing production and processing clusters. This initiative aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and promote gender inclusivity within the fisheries sector.
5. Promotion of Seaweed Cultivation and Pearl Farming: The BJP promises to promote activities like seaweed cultivation and pearl farming under PM Matsya Sampada Yojana to increase income opportunities for fishermen.
6. Establishment of Nucleus Breeding Centres and Brood Banks: To enhance production and productivity in the fisheries sector, the BJP plans to establish a network of Nucleus Breeding Centres and Brood Banks.
7. Use of Technology for Biosecurity and Disease Management: The manifesto highlights the importance of using technology for farm biosecurity, disease management in aquatic animals, and growth monitoring to ensure sustainable growth in the fisheries sector.
The BJP's manifesto underscores the significance of the fisheries sector as a "Sunrise Sector" sustaining the livelihoods of millions in India, particularly marginalized and vulnerable communities. With India being the third-largest fish-producing country globally, the BJP aims to leverage this sector's potential for economic growth and social development through strategic initiatives outlined in its election manifesto.
