BJP Completes Candidate List for Gujarat Lok Sabha Seats, Drops Five MPs

In a significant political development from Ahmedabad on March 24, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its list of six candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat. This announcement completes the party's lineup for all 26 constituencies in the state, with elections slated for May 7. Notably, this latest list sees the replacement of five incumbent MPs, including Mahendra Munjpara, the Minister of State for AYUSH and Child Development, who represented Surendranagar.

BJP Finalises Gujarat Candidates

The BJP has made strategic changes in its candidate roster for Vadodara and Sabarkantha constituencies following the withdrawal of its nominees. Hemang Joshi has been chosen to contest from Vadodara, taking over from two-time MP Ranjan Bhatt. Similarly, Shobna Baraiya will represent Sabarkantha, replacing Bhikhaji Thakor. Joshi currently serves as the vice-chairman of the Municipal School Board of Vadodara Municipal Corporation, while Baraiya is linked to political lineage as the wife of a former BJP MLA from Prantij.

Further adjustments include the nomination of Chandu Shihora for Surendranagar, succeeding Munjpara. Shihora brings to the table his experience as the former president of the Morbi municipality. In Mehsana, Hari Patel, a dedicated party worker from Unjha town, has been given the ticket over Sardaben Patel. Additionally, for Amreli constituency, Bharat Sutariya has been selected over three-term MP Naran Kachhadiya. Sutariya is currently at the helm of Amreli district panchayat.

On the opposition front, Congress has announced 17 candidates for Gujarat out of the 24 seats it is contesting. The party has allocated two seats to AAP, its partner in the INDIA bloc, which has already named its candidates for Bharuch and Bhavnagar.

The BJP's strategic candidate reshuffle comes against the backdrop of its dominant performance in Gujarat during the 2014 and 2019 general elections, where it secured all 26 seats. This move reflects the party's intent to maintain its stronghold in the state while introducing fresh faces and possibly addressing internal assessments of candidate performance and public appeal.

Rajesh Chudasama from Junagadh is among those who have retained their candidacy. This marks his third attempt at securing a seat in the Lok Sabha elections, indicating the party's confidence in his electoral appeal.

As Gujarat gears up for another electoral battle, these candidate announcements are critical for both BJP and Congress, setting the stage for what promises to be a closely watched contest. With both parties finalizing their contenders, the electorate's response to these choices will be keenly observed.
