BJP's Strategic Move: State Chief Surendran to Contest Against Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad
In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its candidates for the four remaining seats in Kerala. The announcement made on March 24 includes some notable names, indicating the party's intent to challenge the traditional political dynamics in the state. Among the candidates is K Surendran, the BJP's state chief, who will contest from the Wayanad constituency against Congress heavyweight Rahul Gandhi.

Joining Surendran in the electoral fray are K S Radhakrishnan, a respected scholar and former vice-chancellor of Sree Sankara Sanskrit University, and G Krishnakumar, an actor-turned-politician. Radhakrishnan will contest from Ernakulam, while Krishnakumar is set to challenge opponents in Kollam. Additionally, T N Sarasu, a former government college principal known for her confrontations with Left student unions, will seek electoral fortune from Alathur in Palakkad district.
The BJP's decision to field strong candidates in these constituencies is seen as an attempt to disrupt the long-standing bipolar political landscape of Kerala, traditionally dominated by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). This move comes after the party had previously announced candidates for 12 seats, with its ally BDJS contesting four seats in the state.
Surendran's candidature in Wayanad is particularly noteworthy. Known for his role in leading agitations against the entry of young women into Sabarimala, Surendran has been at the forefront of BJP's efforts in Kerala since becoming the state unit president in 2020. Despite facing setbacks in previous elections, including a narrow loss by 89 votes in the 2016 Assembly polls in Manjeswaram, his selection signals BJP's determination to make significant inroads in Kerala.
K S Radhakrishnan and G Krishnakumar bring their own unique backgrounds to their candidacies. Radhakrishnan, who joined BJP in 2019, has an illustrious career as an academic and was also the chairman of the state Public Service Commission under UDF governments. Krishnakumar, on the other hand, has been active in politics since his unsuccessful assembly election bid from Thiruvananthapuram in 2021.
T N Sarasu is set to challenge sitting MP Remya Haridas and State Devaswom Minister K Radhakrishnan in Alathur. Her candidacy adds another layer to BJP's strategy to challenge traditional political forces in Kerala.
With these announcements, all eyes are now on Kerala's 20 Lok Sabha constituencies as they prepare for polls on April 26. The BJP's strategic candidate selection underscores its ambition to alter the political landscape of Kerala by challenging established players and offering voters an alternative choice.
