BJP Triumphs in Delhi Lok Sabha Elections, Overcoming AAP-Congress
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Delhi Lok Sabha elections, securing all seven seats and achieving a hat-trick in the national capital. However, the margin of victory has significantly decreased compared to the 2019 elections. Despite facing adverse circumstances, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress alliance put up a tough fight against the BJP, with AAP claiming that the people have voted against the saffron party's politics of hatred and dictatorship. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal led a vigorous campaign after being released from Tihar jail on interim bail, drawing massive crowds at rallies and roadshows. However, his efforts were not enough to surpass the BJP's challenge. The election results indicate that although AAP has become a national party, it still has a long way to go before posing a significant challenge to the BJP at the national level. Yogendra Chandoliya, a debutant candidate from the Northwest Delhi constituency, secured the highest victory margin among all winning BJP candidates, defeating Congress' Udit Raj by over 2.90 lakh votes. In the 2019 general elections, BJP candidates won by margins ranging from over 2.28 lakh to 5.78 lakh. However, this time, three candidates won by a margin of less than one lakh votes, with only Chandoliya surpassing the two-lakh mark.BJP's Kamaljeet Sehrawat from West Delhi defeated AAP's Mahabal Mishra by 1.99 lakh votes. Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of late veteran leader Sushma Swaraj, won the New Delhi seat with 78,370 votes, defeating AAP's candidate Somnath Bharti by the lowest margin of victory among all winning candidates. Swaraj, a first-time candidate, replaced outgoing MP and Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi. In the Northeast Delhi constituency, BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari secured a hat-trick by defeating Congress' Kanhaiya Kumar with 1.38 lakh votes. Ramvir Singh Bidhuri won the South Delhi seat with 1.24 lakh votes. Tiwari was the only old candidate repeated by the party. Praveen Khandelwal, BJP candidate from Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat, defeated Congress veteran J P Agarwal by a margin of 89,325 votes. Harsh Malhotra, fielded by the BJP in place of outgoing MP Gautam Gambhir, won the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 93,663 votes. The BJP headquarters erupted in celebrations as party workers danced to dhol beats and chanted Modi slogans. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh acknowledged the election results as a message from the public, expressing their fatigue with the BJP's ten-year rule and their desire for change. He stated that inflation had taken its toll on the people and that they had chosen to reject the BJP. On the other hand, the BJP attributed its clean sweep to the development work carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in Delhi and the rejection of corruption and opportunism associated with Arvind Kejriwal and Congress.Throughout the campaign, PM Modi and chief ministers from various states targeted the Aam Aadmi Party, labeling it as "kattar beimaan hardcore corrupt" and mocking its alliance with Congress. Kejriwal's arrest on May 21 further complicated matters for AAP, as it was already grappling with the absence of key leaders. Former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and former health minister Satyendar Jain were both in jail on separate charges. Kejriwal's arrest led to delays in announcing the party's manifesto and formulating an electoral strategy.Despite suffering unexpected losses in Hindi heartland states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, the BJP managed to secure a hat-trick of wins in Delhi. The party's decision to replace all its candidates, except one, paid off. Although AAP failed to win any seats in Delhi, its vote share increased by nearly six percent compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The Congress, on the other hand, lost over three percent of its vote share compared to the previous elections. The BJP's vote share of 54.33 percent resulted in a clean sweep of all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi for the third consecutive time. The turnout for the May 25 elections was 58.69 percent. AAP contested a total of 22 seats across various states but failed to secure victories in Gujarat, Delhi, and Assam. In Punjab, the ruling party won only three seats. According to the Election Commission, 91 percent of candidates on the seven seats in Delhi lost their security deposit. While the BJP fell short of a majority at the national level, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj expressed hope that NDA allies TDP and JDU would prevent the BJP from forming a government. He referred to previous attempts by N. Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar to unite opposition leaders against Modi and called upon them to take action once again. The Lok Sabha election results have set the stage for next year's Assembly elections in Delhi. Despite the BJP's dominance in Lok Sabha polls, it has been unable to dent AAP's prospects in the national capital. AAP has previously won landslide victories in Delhi's Assembly elections but failed to secure any seats in the Lok Sabha polls. In conclusion, the BJP's clean sweep in the Delhi Lok Sabha elections reflects both its sustained attack on the Kejriwal government and the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While AAP put up a strong fight, it still has a long way to go before challenging the BJP at the national level. The election results have significant implications for the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi, where AAP has previously enjoyed success.
