BJP Wins Big in Chhattisgarh Lok Sabha Elections; Congress Holds One Seat
In a striking display of political dominance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again demonstrated its stronghold in Chhattisgarh during the recent Lok Sabha elections. The party, buoyed by the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the effective implementation of election promises by the Vishnu Deo Sai government, secured a resounding victory by winning 10 out of 11 seats in the state. This performance comes just six months after the BJP decisively defeated the Congress in the assembly polls.

The Congress, on the other hand, faced a significant setback, managing to win only one seat compared to the two constituencies it had secured in 2019. Notably, former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, a prominent figure within the Congress, was defeated in the polls. The Election Commission's final tally revealed that the BJP clinched victories in key constituencies including Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur, and several others reserved for Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes.
In Raipur, BJP's Brijmohan Agrawal achieved a landmark victory over Congress's Vikas Upadhyay by an unprecedented margin of 575,285 votes. Agrawal's win is indicative of the strong support for the BJP among the electorate. Similarly, in Durg, BJP's Vijay Baghel outperformed his Congress rival Rajendra Sahu by a margin of 438,226 votes.
The election also witnessed upsets in constituencies like Bastar, where BJP's Mahesh Kashyap defeated Congress's Kawasi Lakhma, an influential tribal leader and former state minister. This loss was particularly poignant for the Congress as Bastar was one of the two seats it had won in 2019.
Another noteworthy victory for the BJP came from Mahasamund, where Rupkumari Chaudhary triumphed over Congress's Tamradhwaj Sahu by 145,456 votes. The tribal-dominated Raigarh constituency saw BJP's Radheshyam Rathiya winning against Congress nominee Dr Menka Devi Singh with a margin of 240,391 votes.
Despite these losses, Congress managed to retain its presence in Korba, where Jyotsna Mahant emerged victorious against BJP's Saroj Pandey by a difference of 43,283 votes. However, this solitary win did little to counterbalance the overall gains made by the BJP.
The election results also reflected a shift in vote share between the two major parties. The BJP saw its vote share increase from 46.27 per cent in last year's assembly polls to 52.65 per cent in these Lok Sabha elections. Conversely, the Congress experienced a decline from 42.23 per cent to 41.06 per cent.
This electoral outcome not only reinforces the BJP's dominance in Chhattisgarh but also mirrors its performance in previous Lok Sabha elections where it consistently won 10 out of 11 seats since the state's formation. The party's ability to maintain its appeal among voters underscores its continued political ascendancy in the region.
