BJP Files Complaint with EC Over Akhilesh Yadav's Remarks on Mukhtar Ansari
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called upon the Election Commission to take swift action against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for his controversial remarks concerning the demise of mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and for making unfounded accusations regarding India's alleged involvement in killings abroad. This move came after a BJP delegation, including national general secretary Arun Singh, Sanjay Mayukh, and Om Pathak, filed a complaint against Yadav, accusing him of breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

In a memorandum submitted to the Election Commission (EC), the BJP has requested that an FIR be lodged against Yadav for his "unfounded, mischievous, and defamatory anti-national statements". Furthermore, they have asked the EC to admonish Yadav for his remarks against India and to demand an apology from him. The MCC was enforced across the nation following the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls by the EC on March 16.
During a press interaction after their meeting with EC officials, Singh highlighted that Yadav's allegations about Ansari's death due to poisoning in jail were baseless and indicative of his "lost mental balance", spurred by the anticipation of his party's defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. Yadav had met with Ansari's family on Sunday and expressed his shock over Ansari's own fears of being poisoned in jail, urging the government to unveil the truth behind Ansari's death and ensure justice for his family.
Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar who had been incarcerated in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005 with over 60 criminal cases to his name, passed away last month at Rani Durgawati Medical College after his health worsened in Banda jail. Although a post-mortem confirmed cardiac arrest as the cause of death, a magisterial inquiry was initiated amid opposition parties' skepticism and allegations from his family of slow poisoning.
BJP leader Singh also criticized Yadav for tarnishing India's image by levelling baseless allegations about India's involvement in extrajudicial killings abroad. He accused Yadav of resorting to appeasement politics and attempting to disrupt the electoral atmosphere by exploiting religious sentiments. The BJP has urged the EC for immediate action to prevent any potential disturbance to peace and order.
Yadav also took aim at the BJP government, insinuating that it was implicated in orchestrating killings in foreign countries. He questioned whether such actions were indicative of a developed India. This statement has added fuel to an already heated political environment, with calls for immediate intervention by electoral authorities to maintain decorum and fairness during the election period.
