Ruling BJD and Opposition BJP Blame Each Other Over NH Project Delays
The ruling BJD and opposition BJP on Wednesday targeted each other over delay in implementation of several national highway projects in Odisha. While the BJD threatened to hit the streets protesting the Centre’s negligence towards several NH projects, the BJP blamed the state government and accused it of non-cooperation.
The political parties in Odisha, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have recently locked horns over the delay in several national highway projects within the state. The discord between these two parties has been escalating as each accuses the other of creating obstacles that hinder progress on these key infrastructure projects.
BJD's Accusations Against BJP

In a press conference held by BJD spokespersons Lenin Mohanty and Shreemayee Mishra, they alleged that despite their efforts to expedite project completion through communication with the Centre, BJP MPs remained passive. "What our BJP MPs and Union ministers are doing for Odisha? They have ignored the interest of Odia people who elected them in 2019 Lok Sabha elections," Mishra stated. This criticism came following Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s meeting with Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding major national highway projects in Odisha.
The BJD leaders also expressed concern about significant delays in specific projects such as Cuttack-Sambalpur National Highway project, stating it was causing considerable distress to locals due to poor road conditions. They further highlighted that despite receiving full support from the state government, there had been no notable progress on Coastal Highway project of Odisha.
Counter Allegations By The BJP
In response to these accusations, representatives from BJP rejected all allegations levelled against them by BJD. Instead, they pointed fingers at the state government for delaying necessary approvals related to land acquisition and forest clearance required for NH projects. Anil Biswal, a spokesperson from BJP said "The BJD government did not approve land acquisition, forest clearance and other associated works required for NH projects". He further claimed that frequent changes made by state government concerning the alignment of the coastal highway project were leading to unnecessary delays.
While both parties continue to blame each other for the delay in these critical infrastructure projects, it is clear that such political discord is causing significant hindrance in their completion. The Cuttack-Sambalpur National Highway and Coastal Highway are crucial for Odisha's development and connectivity, yet their progress seems hindered by this ongoing political stalemate.
The Way Forward
As accusations continue to fly between BJD and BJP, it becomes increasingly evident that a resolution must be found quickly. While disagreements over procedures and policies are common in any democratic setup, they should not impede developmental projects that directly affect people’s lives. It is essential for both parties to set aside their differences and work collaboratively towards expediting these national highway projects. Only then can the state of Odisha truly prosper.
In conclusion, while political rivalry might be an integral part of democracy, it should not come at the cost of public welfare. The need of the hour is effective dialogue and cooperation between all stakeholders involved so as to ensure timely completion of these vital infrastructure projects in Odisha.
