Bizarre rule: Kerala's elite school asks girls and boys to maintain 1 metre distance
Thiruvanathapuram, Sept 24: A school in Kottayam district of Kerala has issued a diktat for students. It has reportedly asked girls and boys to maintain one metre distance in the school premises.
The school in question is Pallikoodam school near Chidambarampady Junction, in Kalathilpady, Rubber Board Rd, Kottayam, which is managed by Mary Roy, the mother of acclaimed author and renowned social activist Arundhati Roy.
The senior students have been allegedly asked to stop talking to junior students and have been told to avoid friendship with them. However, there is an exception to the bizarre rule for co-curricular activities like theatre, choir, etc.
The notice was issued on March 16 this year. [Click here to read the notice]
However, the school official website also states, "Pallikoodam is a co-ed school where interaction between boys and girls is encouraged. They study together, swim together, eat together and up to a certain age share dormitories. They sing, they dance, they act, they paint, they sew and they cook together."
The school principal reportedly refused to comment on the issue. Mary Roy founded the school in 1967. It is said to be one of the top ranked schools of Kerala.
