Bihar Politics: Bima Bharti Switches from JD(U) to RJD, Eyes Lok Sabha Seat

In a significant political shift in Bihar, Bima Bharti, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Janata Dal (United) [JDU], has resigned from her party to join the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Lalu Prasad Yadav. This move, announced on March 23, has sparked widespread speculation regarding Bharti's potential candidacy in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The formal induction into RJD was facilitated by Tejashwi Yadav, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, marking a notable transition in the state's political landscape.

Bharti Moves from JD(U) to RJD

Bharti's departure from JDU and her subsequent alignment with RJD underscore a deep-seated discontent with the treatment of the extremely backward classes within the ruling coalition of Bihar. Citing personal grievances, including the incarceration of her husband and son, Bharti articulated her disillusionment with the current administration. She expressed readiness to contest in the Lok Sabha polls under RJD's banner, contingent upon Lalu Prasad Yadav's directive.

Representing the Rupauli assembly segment in Purnea district, Bharti's political journey has been marked by her erstwhile affiliation with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. However, her relationship with Kumar soured following disagreements over cabinet inductions, notably concerning Leshi Singh, a JDU MLA and rival to Bharti's family.

The potential nomination of Bharti by RJD for the Purnea Lok Sabha seat introduces complexities within the opposition alliance, particularly with Congress. The recent induction of Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, into Congress poses a direct challenge to Bharti's candidacy, given Yadav's expressed interest in contesting from Purnea.

In a parallel development, former MLA Faraz Fatmi also relinquished his JDU membership, following closely on the heels of his father Mohammed Ali Ashraf Fatmi's resignation. The senior Fatmi, a four-term MP and erstwhile national general secretary of JDU, has signaled his intention to contest from Madhubani—a constituency now allocated to JDU's ally BJP.

This series of resignations from JDU highlights a growing rift within Bihar's ruling coalition and signals potential realignments ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The moves by both Bharti and the Fatmi family back to RJD reflect broader political undercurrents and dissatisfaction among certain factions within JDU. As these developments unfold, they are likely to have significant implications for both state and national politics in India.
