Bijapur Encounter Questioned: Claims Emerge of Victims Being Villagers, Not Naxalites

Recent allegations have surfaced regarding an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, where police claimed to have eliminated 12 Naxalites. Locals and activists, however, contest the official narrative, suggesting the encounter was fabricated and the deceased were civilians. Amidst these claims, political tensions rise as the Congress party voices concerns over potential undue pressure on security forces.

Controversy Over Bijapur Encounter

The police operation took place near Pidia village under Gangaloor police station limits, purportedly targeting Maoists in an anti-Naxalite initiative. Following the operation, villagers and family members of the deceased have staged protests, accusing the police of falsifying the encounter. They argue that those killed were simply villagers from Pidia and nearby Itawar, engaged in collecting tendu leaves, a common livelihood in the region.

Avlam Budri, a local woman, expressed her distress, stating her husband was detained by police under similar circumstances and his fate remains unknown. Tribal activist Soni Sori, translating for Budri and other locals, reinforced the claim that the encounter was staged and innocent villagers were targeted. Further corroborating these allegations, Rakesh Avlam shared his account of how villagers collecting tendu leaves were pursued and attacked by police forces.

In contrast to these allegations, Deputy Inspector General of Police for Dantewada region-South Bastar Kamlochan Kashyap defended the operation. He insisted that those killed were indeed Maoists with bounties on their heads. This statement stands in stark opposition to the narratives provided by villagers and activists.

The controversy has caught the attention of political figures as well. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel of Congress commented on the situation via social media platform X. He emphasized the importance of addressing Naxalism but cautioned against actions that could undermine public trust in security forces. Baghel's statement also included a warning to the BJP-led state government against repeating historical mistreatments of tribal communities under the guise of combating Naxalism.

This incident has sparked a debate over the conduct of anti-Naxalite operations and their impact on local communities. With conflicting accounts from police authorities and local villagers, the truth behind the Bijapur encounter remains mired in controversy. As this situation unfolds, it underscores the complex challenges faced in regions afflicted by Naxalite insurgency and raises questions about accountability and justice for those caught in the crossfire.
