Bihar’s Women Power Illuminating The Energy Sector: A Testament To Empowerment

In a remarkable testament to Bihar's commitment to women's empowerment, the state's energy sector is witnessing a transformative wave led by women. State Energy and Planning and Development Minister, Mr. Bijendra Prasad Yadav, credited Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar's unwavering resolve to empower women for this significant shift.

Bihar s Women Power Illuminating The Energy Sector A Testament To Empowerment

"Today, the flag of development in Bihar is in the hands of women. They are excelling in every field, building not just their own futures but also shaping the destiny of the state and the nation," Mr. Yadav stated.

The energy sector, once considered a male-dominated domain, is now seeing women take center stage. From electricity production to transmission, distribution, and management, women are making their mark across all facets of the sector. Their contributions are not confined to office spaces; they are also actively working on the ground, breaking stereotypes and setting new benchmarks.

Women Lighting Up Bihar

The state's ambitious initiative, Bihar Ke Har Ghar Ko Roshan Karne ki Muhim (Mission to Light Every Home in Bihar), is being driven by the relentless efforts of women. Grid stations like Karbigahia, Digha, and Chandauti are now entirely managed by women, showcasing their skill and dedication. Notably, the Karbigahia Grid in Patna is a shining example of women's efficiency, with its operations and maintenance entirely handled by female workers. On International Women's Day 2024, three additional grids-Chandauti, Sabour, and Digha-were launched, further amplifying women's roles in the sector.

Women are also playing a pivotal role in technical areas such as the Central Relay and Instrument Laboratory, which investigates faults in grid stations, and the State Load Dispatch Center (SLDC), where they work round-the-clock to ensure seamless power distribution.

Breaking Barriers in Revenue and Technology

The financial year 2023-24 saw women contributing significantly to revenue collection, with Bihar's distribution companies collecting Rs 15,109 crore. Women workers were actively involved in door-to-door collections, installation of smart prepaid meters, and consumer sensitization through the Suvidha app. Their presence is equally strong in the field of information technology, with women managing operations in the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) center in three shifts.

Creating a Supportive Ecosystem

Bihar's energy sector has taken proactive steps to ensure a conducive environment for women. Crèches have been set up at workplaces, allowing women to work without worrying about their children's safety. Facilities like Vithika-a relaxation zone-art galleries, and libraries are available to help women recharge and unwind. Regular sports activities and mental health initiatives further underscore the state's commitment to their well-being.

Ensuring Safety and Dignity

To foster a safe and fear-free workplace, the state has established the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Committee. This body not only addresses grievances but also conducts workshops and campaigns to educate women about their rights and self-protection. "There will be no compromise on women's safety and respect," Mr. Yadav emphasized, highlighting the state's zero-tolerance policy towards harassment.

A Bright Future Ahead

The increasing participation of women in Bihar's energy sector is a reflection of their growing confidence and capabilities. From managing grid stations to driving revenue collection and embracing technological advancements, women are proving that no field is beyond their reach. As Mr. Yadav aptly put it, "Bihar is in safe hands, moving steadily towards a future illuminated by the power of its women."

With such initiatives and support systems in place, Bihar is not just empowering women but also setting an example for other states to follow. The energy sector's transformation under women's leadership is a beacon of hope, signaling a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
