Bihar Polls: Battle for Muslim Votes Heats Up as Tejashwi Yadav Promises Muslim Deputy CM

As Bihar gears up for a fiercely contested election, political parties are ramping up efforts to woo the state's Muslim voters - a community that constitutes nearly 17% of the electorate and could play a decisive role in shaping the next government.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Mahagathbandhan's Chief Ministerial face Tejashwi Yadav has made a calculated political move by confirming that, if his alliance comes to power, there will be multiple Deputy Chief Ministers, including one from the Muslim community. The announcement appears aimed at consolidating minority support while also reaching out to Dalits and other marginalised sections.

In an interview to India Today, Tejashwi Yadav said, "Yes, definitely," when asked whether the next Mahagathbandhan government would have a Muslim Deputy CM. He also reaffirmed that the coalition's strategy is to ensure "inclusive governance" beyond the traditional Muslim-Yadav (MY) vote base that has long defined RJD politics.

Tejashwi Yadav highlighted that the Mahagathbandhan's ticket distribution reflected this inclusivity, offering representation to minorities, Dalits, OBCs, EBCs, and even upper castes. "This time, if anyone has given real representation to minorities, it's the RJD and the Mahagathbandhan," he asserted.

However, the ruling NDA is countering the narrative with its own outreach. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar accused the Opposition of treating Muslims as a mere vote bank, claiming that his government had given genuine representation "without discrimination." Kumar said, "When elections come, some people suddenly project themselves as well-wishers of the Muslim community. This is deception."

Political observers view these statements as part of a larger battle for perception and positioning, with both alliances attempting to present themselves as champions of inclusive politics. While the Mahagathbandhan is banking on promises of representation and social justice, the NDA is emphasising governance stability and its record of development.

As campaign rhetoric intensifies, the competition for Muslim votes has become one of the most crucial subplots of the Bihar election - a contest that could once again redefine the state's political equations.
