Bihar Governor Disputes Nehru's 'Ajeeb' Label for Goa Residents

Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar recently stated that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru once described the people of Goa as "Ajeeb" (strange). Arlekar, who is originally from Goa, made these remarks at an event where 'Rakhis' were sent to soldiers. He also suggested that military training should be mandatory for those seeking government jobs. Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth attended the event.

Governor Challenges Nehrus Goa View

Arlekar expressed concerns about the perception of Goa's identity. He noted that there are fewer activities promoting 'Bhartiyata' (Indianness) in Goa, leading to misconceptions. "Many people want to project that Goa is different from others," he said. He emphasized that some individuals try to create an impression that Goa has no connection with the rest of India.

Goa's Historical Ties

The Governor highlighted that while Indian freedom fighters worked to liberate Goa from Portuguese rule, many Goans also sacrificed their lives for India's independence from British rule. He stressed the importance of documenting these sacrifices. "Their sacrifices should be documented," he added.

Arlekar reiterated that Goa is an integral part of India. He mentioned that Nehru's comment, "Goa ke Log Ajeeb Hai" (Goa people are different), contributed to a false narrative. "We don't know what 'Ajeeb' he saw in us. We are not 'Ajeeb'," Arlekar stated. He insisted on the necessity of emphasizing Goa's place within Bharat-mata (Mother India).

Compulsory Military Training Proposal

Speaking to reporters later, Arlekar suggested that India should consider compulsory military training, similar to some other countries. "Experts in our country should give a thought to it," he said. He proposed that those aspiring for government jobs should undergo two years of military training to instill discipline.

Arlekar pointed out that attempts are being made to portray Goa as distinct from the rest of India. He argued against this notion, stating, "We are different from Bharatiyata." This misrepresentation creates an impression that Goa has stronger ties with Portugal than with India.

The Governor's remarks underline the need for a unified national identity and recognition of historical contributions by Goans. His proposal for mandatory military training aims to enhance discipline among government employees and strengthen national unity.

The event served as a platform for discussing broader issues related to national identity and the role of military training in fostering discipline and patriotism among citizens.
