Bihar Caste Survey: 80 Lakh Graduates in Bihar, Only 15 Lakh Have Laptops

According to the caste survey report tabled in Bihar assembly on Tuesday, there are nearly 80 lakh graduates in Bihar, which is around 6.11 per cent of the total population.

The caste survey report tabled in Bihar assembly on Tuesday paints a grim picture of the educational and employment landscape in the state. According to the report, there are nearly 80 lakh graduates in Bihar, which is around 6.11 per cent of the total population. This means that a vast majority of the population, nearly 94 per cent, does not have a college degree.

Educational Attainment

Bihar Caste Survey

The report also highlights the disparities in educational attainment across different caste groups. While the general category has the highest number of graduates, accounting for 13.41 per cent of their total population, the Scheduled Caste SCs have the lowest, with only 3.05 per cent of their population being graduates. This disparity is also reflected in the number of postgraduates and PhDs, with the general category accounting for the majority of these degrees.

The report further reveals that only 9.19 per cent of people have cleared their higher secondary examination and 14.71 per cent have passed class 10. This means that a large number of people in Bihar do not have even a basic education.

Access to Technology

The report also sheds light on the limited access to technology in Bihar. Only 15 lakh people, or 1.15 per cent of the population surveyed, have their own laptops with regular internet connections. This disparity is also reflected across caste groups, with the ORC having the highest percentage of people with laptops and internet, followed by the general category and the SCs.

Employment

In terms of employment, only 1.57 per cent of the population are government employees, while those belonging to organized and unorganized sectors account for 1.22 per cent and 2.14 per cent, respectively. This means that a large majority of the population, nearly 95 per cent, is either unemployed or engaged in informal work.

The Bihar caste survey report provides a comprehensive overview of the educational and employment landscape in the state. The report highlights the significant disparities that exist across different caste groups, with the general category enjoying a significant advantage over the SCs and other backward classes. The report also underscores the need for urgent interventions to improve access to education and employment opportunities for all sections of society.
