Bihar Achieves Milestone with Five Amrit Bharat Trains for Economically Weaker Sections
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated four non-AC Amrit Bharat trains on Friday, making Bihar the starting point for five of these advanced trains aimed at economically weaker sections. This development positions Bihar as the state with the most such trains originating from its stations. Previously, Bihar had two Amrit Bharat trains: one from Darbhanga to Delhi's Anand Vihar Terminal, launched in 2023, and another from Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Saharsa, which began service on April 24, 2025.

With the addition of these new trains, Bihar now hosts five Amrit Bharat trains. Officials noted that these newly launched trains are upgraded versions of the earlier ones, offering improved passenger amenities like enhanced comfort and superior safety technology. The Rajendra Nagar-New Delhi Amrit Bharat train will cover approximately 1,000 km in about 17-and-a-half hours, with a sleeper class fare of Rs 560. Its regular service will commence on July 31.
Enhanced Features for Passenger Comfort
The second train runs between Bapudham Motihari in Bihar and Anand Vihar New Delhi, also covering 1,000 km. The sleeper class fare is set at Rs 555. However, its regular service schedule is yet to be announced separately by railway officials. The third train connects Darbhanga in Bihar to Gomti Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, with a fare of Rs 415 for the non-AC sleeper class. Its regular service will start on July 26.
The fourth train was inaugurated from Bhagalpur in Bihar and will operate weekly between Malda Town in West Bengal and Gomti Nagar starting July 24. According to the Railways, this train will primarily benefit Bihar as most of its route passes through the state. Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, stated that these high-tech trains are designed to run at a maximum speed of 130 km per hour.
Safety and Convenience Features
Kumar highlighted that these trains provide a smart, safe, and comfortable travel experience for middle-class and economically weaker sections. Before these inaugurations, only three Amrit Bharat trains were operational across India. The Railway Ministry plans to manufacture an additional 100 Amrit Bharat rakes to further benefit these segments.
Passenger convenience features include foldable snack tables, mobile holders, foldable bottle holders, fast mobile charging ports, comfortable seats, and radium illuminated flooring strips for visibility in the dark. Additional features include air spring bodies for shock-free travel and modern toilets with electropneumatic flushing systems and automatic soap dispensers.
Advanced Safety Measures
Railway officials also emphasized safety features such as semi-automatic couplers with crash tubes, EP-assisted brake systems, sealed gangways, vacuum evacuation systems, talk-back units in every coach, and fire detection systems—introduced for the first time in non-AC coaches.
The introduction of these advanced trains marks a significant step towards improving rail travel for economically weaker sections while enhancing safety and comfort features previously unseen in non-AC trains.
