Biden govt to impose severest limitations on asylum
The illegal crossings from the southern border is increasing every year and may go up to 11,000-13,000/daily if the government does not act tough.
In what could look like the application of the Trump administration advocating strict laws on asylum, the Biden administration has brought a similar policy on the people who try to migrate to the US. This policy will make people seeking asylum in the US huge difficulties and almost impossible to get approval from the authorities.
According to the proposed policy, the migrants who show up at the US southern border would not be taken in without first seeking protection in a country they passed through. It's quite interesting to note that just last year the US Supreme court allowed Biden to end the Trump-era 'remain in Mexico' immigration policy.

Now what could look like a U-turn in immigration policy front, the Biden administration is placing the measures that would completely ban asylum. The critics are of the view that the imposition of extremely severe limitations on asylum for any nationality except Mexicans would mean no asylum for the people from other nations entering from Mexico.
Number of immigrants crossing over alarming
The Southern Borders have always been an issue for the Homeland Security and Justice Departments who have to control the illegal immigrants. The two organizations have now decided that there is no choice other than placing strict restrictions and limitations on the immigration from Southern Border.
The two organizations are worried that the illegal crossings from the Southern Border is increasing every year and may go up to 11,000-13,000/daily if the government does not act tough. Needless to say, currently on an average nearly 6,500 people enter the US from the Southern Borders. There have been some restrictions due to Covid19; however, those would soon be lifted after which the USA could see a huge influx of asylum seekers.
Measures different from Trump's
When stories started surfacing that the Biden administration is doing exactly what it opposed when Donald Trump was the President, a statement came from the government that these measures are not the same as the ones that were placed by the Trump administration. According to the official statement there is room for exemptions.
The official statement from the Biden administration clarifies that it has made other legal pathways available for asylum seekers. For instance, there are options like humanitarian parole, which are available for people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Ukraine. However, why would people from Ukraine enter from the Southern Border is also a question.
