Bhojpuri Carols Enrich Christmas Celebrations at Mahmoorganj Church in Varanasi
Christmas festivities in Varanasi featured Bhojpuri carols at Mahmoorganj Church on Wednesday. This tradition, which began in 1986, aims to make church services more relatable by using a language that resonates with the local community. Known as the Bhojpuri Church, it attracts many faithful each year who come to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Father Andrew Thomas, the parish priest, highlighted the significance of using Bhojpuri in religious services. "Bhojpuri is not just a regional language but one that resonates deeply with the people here. Many cannot fully comprehend prayers in English, so conducting the services in their mother tongue helps them feel more connected to the message," he explained.
Bhojpuri Carols and Community Connection
Little Rav, a regular attendee of the Bhojpuri carol service, expressed his joy, saying, "Today is a day for rejoicing in church so that peace and love prevail. The love God has shown to us is what we wish to pass on to our family, friends, and community." He believes that singing in Bhojpuri bridges gaps and makes Christ's messages accessible.
Shivpal, a local lawyer, shared his thoughts on the celebration. "It felt great to see the birth of Jesus Christ being celebrated with carols in Bhojpuri. The spirit of the occasion was so much more touching in the language we all understand," he remarked. The use of Bhojpuri enhances the emotional connection for attendees.
Festive Spirit in Lucknow
Meanwhile, Lucknow's St. Joseph Cathedral in Hazratganj also hosted Christmas celebrations with a diverse crowd. Rakesh, a long-time attendee, noted a serene atmosphere this year despite missing larger crowds from previous years. "I've come here today with my wife, sister, son, and daughter," he shared.
Aarti appreciated the event's beauty, saying, "It's such a beautiful programme. I came with my whole family to enjoy the Christmas festivities." Angel, visiting for the first time, was captivated by the musical performances and described them as mesmerizing.
Decorations and Traffic Management
Anshika from Lucknow admired the festive decorations around Hazratganj. "The decoration around Hazratganj is really amazing this year. It's so well arranged, and the area feels so festive," she said. Her first visit to the church for Christmas left her feeling uplifted.
The large turnout led to congestion around Hazratganj, especially near the cathedral. To manage traffic and ensure safety, police presence increased with officers patrolling on horseback. This helped maintain order amidst the bustling celebrations.
The Mahmoorganj Church continues its tradition of serving the community through regular Sunday masses and spiritual activities since its establishment in 1986. Women attending wore sarees and applied sindoor as per local customs during this year's special celebration.
