Bhim Jyoti Utsav 2026 in Delhi marks B R Ambedkar anniversary with 6,000 Jai Bhim lamps

Ahead of B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated Bhim Jyoti Utsav-2026 at Kartavya Path, where more than 6,000 Jai Bhim lamps were lit. She led tributes, flagged off a walkathon on equality, and visited stalls showcasing government welfare schemes. Events aim to build youth awareness of constitutional rights and duties.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday launched the five-day Bhim Jyoti Utsav-2026 at Kartavya Path. Officials said more than 6,000 Jai Bhim lamps were lit. The programme opened with the ceremonial Bhim Jyoti and tributes to B R Ambedkar. Cabinet Minister Ravindra Indraj Singh, senior officials and many citizens attended, as per a statement.

Gupta also started a walkathon to spread awareness on equality. Gupta later toured the venue and viewed displays by government departments. More than 50 stalls explained welfare schemes and public initiatives. The event was held ahead of B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. Officials said activities continued through the day at the specially prepared site.

Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the Constitution was more than law. Gupta said it protected dignity and rights for people at the margins. Gupta also called Ambedkar’s journey a lasting example of social justice. Gupta urged people to apply Ambedkar’s ideals in daily life. Gupta described the festival as a people’s movement.

Gupta said the five-day plan included quizzes, workshops and art exhibitions. Gupta said these events aimed to guide youth and students. Gupta said the focus was on constitutional rights and duties. Gupta also repeated the government’s pledge to support marginalised communities. Officials said the programme ran from April 10 to 14.

According to the statement, the venue included a curated gallery on 299 eminent personalities. The gallery presented contributions through digital and interactive formats. Another exhibition mapped key stages of Ambedkar’s life and public work. It covered early years and the role in drafting the Constitution. It also highlighted work linked to social justice.

The exhibition referenced organisations such as Mooknayak and Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha. It also noted major historical developments, the statement said. A Constitution Fair drew visitors with a digital timeline. Displays also listed government schemes for scholarships, pensions and skill development programmes. Officials said these exhibits aimed to make information easier to understand.

Cultural performances were also included across the schedule. The opening day had musical and folk items, the statement said. It included a wheelchair dance by specially-abled children. Organisers said the performance carried a message of inclusion. The statement added that the programme also planned qawwalis, street plays and Ambedkarite folk music.

The statement said these shows were set for the India Gate lawns from April 12 to 14. Singh said the initiative aimed to spread awareness and take Ambedkar’s ideas wider. Singh cited measures for underprivileged communities, including support for girls’ education. Singh added efforts continued to reach Dalit settlements and other sections.
