Bengal Junior Doctors Convene to Determine Future Actions Amid Ongoing Cease Work

Junior doctors in West Bengal are deliberating on their next steps after senior doctors urged them to reconsider their complete work stoppage. This appeal comes amid concerns about the impact on patients. The junior doctors resumed their strike on October 1 following an attack on medical staff at the College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital in late September.

Bengal Junior Doctors Decide Future Actions

Senior doctor Maitrayee Bandyopadhyay, from RG Kar hospital, suggested a partial withdrawal of the strike. "We all want justice for the raped-murdered woman doctor. My suggestion is for the junior medics to partially withdraw the cease work and provide emergency and OPD services. Agitation and work can continue simultaneously," she stated.

Impact on Healthcare Services

The ongoing strike has significantly affected healthcare services, with junior doctors previously halting work for 41 days after a tragic incident involving a colleague on August 9 at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. They resumed essential services on September 21 after discussions with state officials aimed at ensuring safety and efficient healthcare delivery.

Aniket Mahato, one of the protesting doctors, mentioned that a general body meeting would be held at RG Kar hospital soon. "We will hold a general body meeting at R G Kar hospital shortly. It may take time, but we will inform you of our decision by early tomorrow morning," he said.

Calls for Partial Resumption

Despite requests from senior doctors to resume partial services like outpatient department care, the full strike will continue until the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front announces its decision. Eminent cardiologist Kunal Sarkar also urged junior doctors to partially resume work, highlighting public support and the adverse effects of a total strike on patients.

In response to questions about considering a partial withdrawal due to patient suffering, flood conditions, and the upcoming Durga Puja festival, Mahato said they would discuss all aspects. "We will discuss everything. We need to assess the current situation since our demands for security have so far not been addressed by the government," he added.

Demands for Safety Measures

The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front issued a statement on Monday expressing their stance: "We are compelled to return to a full cease work. Unless we receive clear action from the government on safety, patient services, and the politics of fear, we will have no choice but to continue our full strike."

The situation worsened after an attack on medical staff by a deceased patient's family at Sagore Dutta hospital. This incident reignited tensions and led to renewed calls for improved security measures for healthcare workers.

The junior doctors' decision remains pending as they weigh their options amidst ongoing challenges and demands for better protection in their workplaces.
