Bengal Government Launches Investigation into Surge in Expenses Under Swasthya Sathi Scheme
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has highlighted an increase in expenses under the Swasthya Sathi scheme amid protests over a doctor's rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College. This prompted the government to investigate the matter. "This surge in expenses has happened. And we have lost a huge amount of money... Several people have got treatment utilising the Swasthya Sathi scheme," Banerjee stated in the state Assembly.

A survey indicated a notable rise in spending on patient care under the Swasthya Sathi scheme during protests by junior doctors seeking justice for the deceased doctor. The scheme offers health insurance for secondary and tertiary care up to Rs 5 lakh annually per family. Banerjee mentioned that those found guilty of misusing funds would face consequences. "Mothers of thieves sound the most. So, those who have misused Swasthya Sathi money, this is public money," she remarked.
Swasthya Sathi Scheme Investigation
Banerjee emphasised that decisions should not be rushed, and a thorough investigation is underway. "You have to make one decision, whether to work or cease work. You cannot take money without working in a roundabout way," she said, stressing the need for proper enquiry before action is taken. The government aims to ensure accountability and prevent misuse of public funds.
In another discussion, Banerjee addressed a recent scam involving fraudulent activities targeting beneficiaries' bank accounts. She revealed that her government is developing a mechanism to prevent such frauds. "Honestly speaking, we are simple people and trust people. This is our practice," Banerjee noted, acknowledging that a small percentage misuse this trust.
Tab Scam and Cyber Fraud Prevention
The Chief Minister disclosed that Rs 1,600 crore was spent on the Taruner Sathi Tab scheme, with around 2,000 students falling victim to cyber fraudsters. To combat this, a new app has been introduced to monitor misuse and swiftly identify culprits. "We are coming up with a mechanism for all schemes so that if the money goes to someone else other than the beneficiary, then the culprit responsible for this could be nabbed instantly," she explained.
Banerjee praised police efforts in apprehending groups involved in these crimes from other states. "I will thank the police for arresting this group. Other states had no clue even though it was happening right in front of them," she said, expressing determination to capture those behind such fraudulent activities.
Under the Taruner Swapno scheme, students of classes 10 and 12 were supposed to receive Rs 10,000 each for purchasing tablets and smartphones. The government is committed to ensuring funds reach intended beneficiaries without interference from fraudsters.
