Bengal Leaders Celebrate Centre's Recognition of Bengali as a Classical Language

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed joy over Bengali being recognised as a classical language. She highlighted the state's efforts in securing this status from the Centre, mentioning that extensive research was submitted to support their case. Governor CV Ananda Bose also welcomed the decision, announcing a Rs five lakh award for contributions to Bengali language and culture.

Bengal Welcomes Classical Language Status for Bengali

The Union Cabinet has approved the status of classical language for Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali. "Most happy to share that Bengali/Bangla has been finally accorded the status of a classical language by Government of India," Banerjee stated on X. She added that their well-researched claim was accepted by the Union government.

Recognition of Cultural Heritage

Governor Bose described the announcement as a deserved recognition of Bengali's sublimity. He introduced the Durga Bengal Award, offering Rs five lakh to honour significant contributions to Bengali language and culture. "Bengal's culture, not Bengal's politics, is the signature of greatness of this blessed state," he remarked.

The central government noted that classical languages preserve India's rich cultural heritage. They reflect each community's historical and cultural milestones. State BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called it a historic moment for Bengalis.

Pride in Language and Culture

"Historic moment for the Bengali community as the cabinet declares Bengali a Classical Language!" Majumdar posted on X. He emphasised that this recognition brings immense pride due to Bengali's rich literary tradition and cultural heritage.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw commented on the decision aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's philosophy. The focus is on taking pride in Indian languages and heritage. This decision is seen as part of that broader vision.

Opportunities in Academia

The government statement highlighted that recognising languages as classical will boost employment opportunities. This is especially true in academic and research fields, where such recognition can lead to increased interest and investment.

This development marks a significant milestone for the Bengali community, celebrating its cultural richness and historical significance. The recognition not only honours past achievements but also paves the way for future growth in various sectors related to language and culture.
