Tension Escalates in Bahraich After Ram Gopal Mishra's Death During Idol Immersion Procession

A funeral procession for Ram Gopal Mishra, a young man killed during a Durga idol immersion, turned tense as crowds demanded justice. The incident in Maharajganj, near Rehua Mansoor village, led to unrest with shops set ablaze and angry crowds on the streets. Mishra's family and others cried out for justice amid heightened security during his last rites.

Tension in Bahraich After Youths Death

Following the violence, police suspended internet services in Bahraich district as a precaution. Authorities confirmed three arrests related to Mishra's death and registered a case against six identified individuals and 24 unidentified ones under various legal sections. Around 30 people have been detained in connection with the unrest.

Security Measures and Arrests

Efforts are ongoing to arrest Salman, one of the accused. Protests erupted in several areas with slogans against police and officials. Demonstrators set fire to shops, houses, and vehicles, causing black smoke to fill the sky. Police conducted flag marches to control the situation.

Mishra was part of the Durga idol immersion procession when he was shot. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. "My son has died...We want justice," said Mishra's mother, Munni Devi. BJP MLA Sureshwar Singh stated that Mishra's family seeks strict action against those responsible.

Political Reactions and Government Response

The incident has sparked political reactions. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya warned against conspiracies to disturb peace. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed sadness over the violence and administrative inaction. Akhilesh Yadav blamed the BJP government for the situation, urging more than just action against junior officials.

As tensions rose, top officials including Principal Secretary Home Sanjeev Gupta and Additional Director General of Police Amitabh Yash were sent to Bahraich. A video showed Yash chasing people away with a pistol. "Anti-social elements are being chased away," said Bahraich Superintendent of Police Vrinda Shukla.

Deployment of Security Forces

A large security contingent was deployed by Monday evening to restore order. This included 12 companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), two companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), one company of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), and additional police from Gorakhpur zone.

The Chief Minister is monitoring the situation closely, ensuring no miscreants evade action. Over 30 people have been detained with FIRs filed against 10 individuals while four others have been named in cases related to the violence.

Meanwhile, DGP Prashant Kumar urged residents to remain vigilant against rumours and misinformation. DIG Amarendra Prasad Singh stated that while the situation remains tense, increased police presence has brought it under control for now.

The Samajwadi Party called for an impartial investigation into incidents like entering homes, hoisting flags, making offensive remarks, and changing procession routes. They emphasised that these are not common occurrences and require thorough examination.
