New Guidelines Transform Ayush Hospitals: Prioritizing Quality In-Patient Care

The Ayush Ministry introduces transformative guidelines for Ayush hospitals, focusing on enhancing the quality of in-patient care. These guidelines outline essential bed per population norms and highlight the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors to achieve desirable bed strength.

In a significant move to enhance the quality of in-patient care, the Ayush Ministry has issued a new set of guidelines emphasizing the need for Ayush hospitals across the country. These guidelines aim to ensure that Ayush hospitals adhere to specific bed-to-population norms, providing accessible and comprehensive healthcare services to the Indian population.

Bed Norms and Hospital Distribution

According to the guidelines, the essential norm for Ayush hospitals is one hospital bed per 5,000 population, while the desirable norm is one bed per 2,000 population. Currently, there are 3,844 Ayush hospitals run by central and state governments across India, with a total bed strength of 60,943. To achieve the essential number of beds, the guidelines suggest utilizing public health systems such as medical colleges, district hospitals, and Ayush hospitals of various bed capacities.

Private Sector Contribution and Strategic Planning

The guidelines also encourage the involvement of the private sector in achieving the desirable number of beds, while simultaneously strengthening and increasing bed provision in public health facilities. Strategic planning for service delivery is emphasized as a priority before investing in other components such as infrastructure, human resources, drugs, diagnostics, and equipment. Healthcare services are categorized as either essential or desirable, and human resources are classified accordingly.

Comprehensive Range of Services

Ayush hospitals are expected to provide a comprehensive range of essential services aligned with the principles of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, SowaRigpa, and Homoeopathy. These services include promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative care, catering to a wide spectrum of health conditions. The guidelines encourage the integration of traditional and complementary medicine practices with the contemporary healthcare system to meet the diverse healthcare needs of the population.

Continuum of Care and Infrastructure

The guidelines emphasize the importance of ensuring a continuum of care, establishing assured referral systems, and ensuring facility readiness to manage referred cases. Ayush healthcare facilities should be strategically located to ensure convenient access for rural and urban communities. Adequate space and infrastructure should be allocated to cater to evolving healthcare needs, and hospitals should be resilient to climatic and environmental changes, as well as capable of handling sudden healthcare needs during disasters, emergencies, epidemics, and pandemics.

Quality Assurance and Grievance Redressal

Quality plays a crucial role in Ayush hospitals, and it should be maintained to meet prescribed standards without the need for constant supervision. The guidelines recommend incorporating best practices from contemporary systems like the National Quality Assurance System. National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Healthcare Providers standards for various Ayush systems will be referred to and customized to meet the specific needs of Ayush Centers.

The new guidelines issued by the Ayush Ministry aim to transform Ayush hospitals into centers of excellence, providing quality in-patient care to the Indian population.
