Australia Evaluates Contamination Claims Of MDH And Everest Spices Amid Ban Speculation
Accusations of contamination concerning spices from Indian companies MDH and Everest have prompted an investigation by Australia's food safety agency.
The agency is currently looking into these allegations and will determine the need for a food recall. This scrutiny follows similar actions taken by other regulators globally.

Australia Asses Contamination Claims Of MDH, Everest
In Hong Kong, sales of certain MDH and Everest spice blends were suspended after tests revealed high levels of ethylene oxide, a pesticide deemed unfit for human consumption and considered a long-term cancer risk. The Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety (CFS) conducted tests on samples collected from retail outlets, which detected the presence of ethylene oxide, as per media reports.
As a result, affected products were removed from shelves, and vendors were instructed to stop sales. Similarly, Singapore has also ordered a recall of the Everest mix due to the presence of ethylene oxide. The regulatory actions taken by Hong Kong and Singapore have prompted heightened international attention to the issue, reported Hindustan Times.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has stated that they are collaborating with international counterparts to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation. They are also working closely with federal, state, and territory food enforcement agencies in Australia to assess whether further action, such as product recalls, is necessary.
The use of ethylene oxide as a treatment for foods is not permitted in Australia. Therefore, if the spices are found to contain ethylene oxide above allowable levels, the regulatory agency may indeed recall the products to ensure consumer safety.
Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is gathering more information on the matter, and India is reportedly conducting inspections at the plants of MDH and Everest to investigate the source of contamination and ensure compliance with food safety standards, as reported by Hindustan Times.
This coordinated effort among international regulators underscores the seriousness of the issue and the commitment to safeguarding public health.
