Aurangzeb Tomb Controversy: Shinde Draws Parallels with US Decision on Osama Bin Laden's Burial

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently criticised the glorification of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, drawing a parallel with how the US handled Osama bin Laden's burial. Shinde highlighted that the US disposed of bin Laden's body at sea to prevent any form of idolisation. This statement came amid a heated debate in the legislative council, where Shinde questioned the reverence for Aurangzeb in Maharashtra.

Shinde Compares Aurangzeb Tomb to Osamas Burial

Shinde's remarks were part of a broader discussion on Nagpur violence and the controversy surrounding Aurangzeb's tomb. Right-wing groups have been demanding its removal, arguing against honouring a figure they consider a blemish on history. Shinde emphasised that Aurangzeb had offered Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje a choice to convert to Islam, which he refused, leading to his brutal execution.

Political Tensions and Allegations

The deputy chief minister also responded to allegations from Shiv Sena UBT MLC Anil Parab, who accused Shinde of switching allegiance from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to the BJP due to pressure from Central agencies. Shinde countered by reiterating his stance on Aurangzeb and questioning why such a figure should be glorified in Maharashtra.

Shinde criticised state Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal for comparing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's governance to Aurangzeb's rule. He questioned whether Fadnavis had ever tortured anyone like Aurangzeb did. This comment led to an uproar, with Parab demanding the right to respond, but council chairperson Ram Shinde did not allow him to speak.

Protests and Investigations

In Nagpur, supporters of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal protested by burning an effigy of Aurangzeb. The police intervened, but rumours about religious scriptures on the effigy sparked further unrest. This incident added fuel to the ongoing debate over Aurangzeb's legacy in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, multiple agencies are investigating a money laundering case linked to a resort owned by an aide of Anil Parab in Dapoli. Parab has been summoned several times for questioning regarding this matter. Shinde accused Congress of protecting Aurangzeb's tomb and stated that his actions were transparent and aimed at preserving Shiv Sena from those sympathetic to Aurangzeb.

The legislative council session was marked by protests from opposition members, including Leader of the Opposition Ambadas Danve and Sachin Parab, who stood in solidarity with Anil Parab. Despite their efforts, they were not granted permission to counter Shinde's statements during the session.

The ongoing controversy highlights deep political divisions in Maharashtra over historical figures and their legacies. The debate continues as both sides remain firm in their positions regarding Aurangzeb's place in history and its impact on current political dynamics.
