Assembly Election Results 2024: How Many Seats Needed For Power in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir?

Counting of votes for the Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir is underway. The elections in Jammu and Kashmir were conducted between September 18 and October 1, while Haryana's 90 Assembly seats cast their votes on October 5. In Jammu and Kashmir, voters in 24 constituencies, including Shopian, Kulgam, Doda, Ramban, and Anantnag, participated on September 18, followed by 26 constituencies, including Ganderbal, Nowshera, Hazratbal, Lal Chowk, and Rajouri, on September 25. The remaining 40 constituencies, including Bandipora, Handwara, Langate, Kathua, and Baramulla, voted on October 1.

The two primary political parties in Haryana are the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party, both contesting in 89 constituencies. Other significant parties in the state include the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), led by Dushyant Chautala, and Abhay Singh Chautala's Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). The ruling BJP decided to withdraw its candidate Rohtash Jangra in Sirsa, hinting at support for sitting MLA Gopal Kanda of the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP). Meanwhile, the Congress has ceded the Bhiwani Assembly constituency to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The JJP has formed an alliance with Chandrashekhar Azad's Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), while the INLD has partnered with Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

In Jammu and Kashmir, the political landscape features four major parties: the Jammu and National Conference (JKNC), led by Farooq and Omar Abdullah; the People's Democratic Party (JKPDP) of Mehbooba Mufti; the Congress; and the BJP. Other noteworthy parties include Altaf Bukhari's Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP), Sajad Gani Lone's Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC), and Gulam Nabi Azad's Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP). The Congress and National Conference are allies, along with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP). Additionally, the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) led by Engineer Rashid is also contesting.

Previous Election Results

In the 2019 Haryana Assembly Election, the BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 40 seats, while the Congress secured 31 seats. Manohar Lal Khattar continued as Chief Minister with the support of the JJP, which won 10 seats in its debut election. In 2014, the BJP won 47 seats, the INLD claimed 19, and the Congress garnered just 15.

In the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election, the JKPDP won 28 seats, becoming the largest party, while the BJP followed with 25 seats. They formed a coalition government under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, while the National Conference and Congress secured 15 and 12 seats, respectively.

Majority Mark

To form a government, a party or coalition must achieve the majority mark in the Legislative Assembly, which is calculated as half the total number of seats plus one. In Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, both Assemblies have 90 seats, making the majority mark 46.
