Assam's Tiwa Students Demand Government Action and Recognition

The All Tiwa Students Union (ATSU) has announced a series of protests against the Assam government, citing neglect and deprivation of the Tiwa community. ATSU President Cheniram Malang stated that the organisation has been addressing the fundamental issues of the Tiwa people and other indigenous groups in Central Assam for over three decades.

Demands for Constitutional Status

The Tiwa autonomous council has long sought constitutional recognition under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Since 1977, no Assembly seat has been reserved for the Tiwa community. Malang highlighted that the annual government funding for the Council is steadily decreasing.

Malang also pointed out that the funds allocated to the Tiwa Council are 50% less than those given to the Miching and Rabha councils. This disparity in funding has further exacerbated the challenges faced by the Tiwa community.

Unfulfilled Promises

During two open meetings at the historic Jonbeel Mela, the Chief Minister promised to allocate 50 bighas (16.5 acres) of land for the annual event. However, not a single acre has been provided. Instead, the ruling BJP recently constructed a party office at this significant venue, which has hurt the pride and dignity of the community.

On August 27 last year, the Chief Minister discussed ten critical issues with ATSU but failed to take any action to resolve them. This inaction has led to increased frustration among the Tiwa people.

Planned Protests

To press their demands, ATSU General Secretary Biman Pratim Masreng announced a series of democratic actions. The union will hold a three-hour sit-in at Morigaon town on July 19. Additionally, ATSU plans to mark August 27 as a day of betrayal due to the Chief Minister's unfulfilled promises.

Masreng warned that if their demands are not met, ATSU will escalate its protests. These could include highway blockades, railway blockades, economic blockades, and a bandh in Central Assam during a second phase of agitation.

Call for Unity

ATSU has urged all ethnic groups in Central Assam to join their agitation. The union believes that collective action is necessary to address their grievances and achieve their goals.

The ATSU's planned protests reflect deep-seated frustrations with perceived governmental neglect and unfulfilled promises. The union's call for unity among ethnic groups underscores their determination to fight for their rights and recognition.
