Exploring the Potential of Assam's Tea, Tourism, and Healthcare Sectors at Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit
On Tuesday, the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit commenced, focusing on Assam's potential in traditional sectors like tea and tourism, alongside emerging fields such as healthcare. Policymakers, experts, and investors gathered to discuss these industries' roles in the state's development. Various sessions addressed tea, tourism, healthcare, AYUSH, and wellness sectors, highlighting their significance.

Tea Industry's Global Aspirations
During a session titled "200 Years & Growing: Nurturing Assam Teas Vision for Global Leadership," Bimal Bora, the state Industries and Commerce Minister, emphasised Assam's tea industry's dynamic nature. He stated that it is poised for international success beyond its legacy. Bora affirmed the government's commitment to making Assam tea a global leader and promoting it as a wellness beverage through strategic branding and investments.
Rupesh Gowala, Labour and Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare Minister, highlighted government initiatives supporting the tea industry in healthcare and education. Discussions included diversifying tea products, promoting tea tourism, addressing climate change challenges, and enhancing Assam tea branding. The need for skilled labour and innovative market expansion approaches was also stressed.
Tourism Sector's Diverse Potential
In a session titled "Assam: Destination for All Seasons & All Reasons," Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass highlighted the sector's existing and emerging potential. He mentioned river tourism, wildlife and eco-tourism, tea tourism, golf tourism, adventure tourism, heritage tourism, among others. Additional Chief Secretary J B Ekka emphasised transforming Assam into a year-round tourist destination with advanced infrastructure.
Chandra Bhushan Kumar from Andaman and Nicobar Administration shared insights on eco-tourism models inspired by successful initiatives in the Union territory. He discussed challenges faced by the archipelago's tourism industry to prepare stakeholders for sustainability. Speakers also underlined enhancing international connectivity and developing luxury travel infrastructure for high-value travellers.
Healthcare Advancements
The "Health Horizons: Transformation of the Health Sector" session focused on improving Assam's healthcare landscape through innovation and public-private partnerships. State Health Minister Ashok Singhal outlined plans to enhance healthcare accessibility and infrastructure while promoting digital health initiatives. He noted that Assam could become a hub for alternative medicine within three to five years.
Discussions covered patient care improvements, opportunities in biomedical devices manufacturing, investment prospects, wellness practices like Ayurveda and yoga. The state's private health infrastructure is expected to undergo significant transformation soon.
AYUSH and Fragrance Opportunities
A session on "AYUSH, Tea, Fragrance & Flavours" explored Assam's strengths in these sectors for sustainable growth and global opportunities. Experts discussed how these industries can drive economic growth and create employment while contributing to Assam's global identity. European Union ambassador Herve Delphin provided an international perspective on Assams potential in these fields.
Agriculture Minister Atul Bora highlighted employment generation potential in these industries while promoting sustainability and export potential. He expressed optimism about future collaborations to innovate Assams unique products globally. Panelists shared insights on innovation trends in their fields and discussed leveraging resources for competitive advantage globally.
The summit underscored Assam's diverse potential across traditional and emerging sectors. With strategic efforts in branding, infrastructure development, and collaboration, the state aims to strengthen its position in global markets while fostering sustainable growth.
