Assam Rifles Convoy Attacked In Manipur: Two Jawans Killed, Five Injured

On Friday evening, an Assam Rifles convoy was ambushed by unidentified gunmen near Nambol Sabal Leikai in Manipur's Bishnupur district. The attack resulted in the deaths of two jawans and left five others injured. Security forces have been dispatched to the scene to manage the situation.

The incident occurred around 5:50 pm as the convoy, carrying 33 Assam Rifles personnel, was en route from Imphal to Bishnupur. The injured individuals were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Reactions from Officials

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and condemned the attack as a "heinous act of violence." In a statement shared on X by Raj Bhawan, he extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the swift recovery of those injured. He emphasized that such acts would be met with strong measures to ensure peace in the region.

Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh also voiced his condemnation, describing the ambush as a "cruel blow" to the state. "I am deeply shaken to hear about the ambush on our brave 33 Assam Rifles personnel at Nambol Sabal Leikai. The loss of two jawans and injuries to several others is a cruel blow to us all," he stated on X.

Security Measures Intensified

A joint search operation involving Assam Rifles and state police was initiated in response to this attack. This incident has occurred amidst increased security concerns in Manipur, which has been experiencing ongoing unrest and violence across various districts since last year.

"My deepest condolences to the families of the fallen and prayers for the quick recovery of the injured. Their courage and sacrifice will remain in our hearts forever. The perpetrators of this heinous act must face the harshest punishment," Singh added.
