Shock as Assam Govt. Official Allegedly Beaten Up by Junior Doctors at SMCH

Bonrai Rongmei, an Inspector of Drugs in the Directorate of Health Services, was allegedly mistreated and physically assaulted by a group of junior doctors at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. An intern has been suspended following the incident.

On September 12, an unfortunate incident took place in the Cachar district of Assam where a government official was allegedly beaten with an iron rod by a group of junior doctors at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). The episode has led to the suspension of an intern doctor associated with the event, according to police officials.

Assam Government Official Assaulted

Bonrai Rongmei, who serves as Inspector of Drugs in the Directorate of Health Services, had visited SMCH on Monday night to see his sick sister-in-law. During his visit, he interacted with a junior doctor regarding blood tests which led to an unexpected altercation. Rongmei claimed that when he queried about the blood tests from one of the junior doctors present there, he was met with rudeness and disrespect. Despite informing them about his position as a government employee, the young medic continued shouting at him.

The Escalation

Rongmei further alleged that as their argument escalated, several other doctors joined in. He was dragged into a corner where he was slapped and assaulted using an iron rod. The incident soon drew attention from local people who arrived at the hospital premises protesting against such violent behavior from medical professionals supposed to uphold patient care and respect for all individuals.

Police Intervention

Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta reported that following these protests, a police team reached SMCH promptly bringing things under control before they could escalate any further. He added that investigations are currently underway regarding this shocking occurrence within what is generally considered a sanctuary for healing - not violence.

Inquiry Underway

Mahatta also confirmed that cooperation is being extended by SMCH authorities towards facilitating these investigations effectively. In light of this disturbing event involving healthcare workers resorting to physical assault instead of maintaining decorum and professional behavior, it is expected that the authorities will take appropriate action to prevent such incidents in future.

In conclusion, this episode serves as a stark reminder of the need for maintaining professionalism and respect within healthcare settings. It also underscores the importance of ensuring safety and dignity for all individuals - be they patients or visitors - within hospital premises. The prompt response from local people and police highlights the significance of community involvement in holding accountable those who breach these standards. As we await further updates on investigations into this incident, it is hoped that justice will be served promptly and effectively.
