Assam: Major tragedy averted as security forces recover suspected IED in Tinsukia

A major tragedy was averted as the security forces on Wednesday recovered a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) in Tinsukia's Makum area in Assam.

The IED was found in a plastic bag planted on the Makum bypass road passing through the overbridge, according to news agency ANI.

"With the help of bomb squad team of Indian Army, we defused the object in a safe place. It is an IED-like object. Our investigation is on to find who had planted it and what was their motive," ANI quoted Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, Superintendent, Tinsukia Police, in a tweet.

Talking to EastMojo website, the SP said that a joint team of police and the Army recovered the suspected IED-like object based on input. "Immediately, the area was cordoned off, and the bomb disposal squad was called in. The experts from the Army neutralised the suspected IED by carrying out a controlled blast. The remains from the site will be sent to forensics for examination to find out the kind of explosive," he added.

It comes on a day when 10 police personnel and a driver were killed in a blast carried out by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district. A senior official told the PTI that the incident took place under Aranpur police station limits when a team of the state police's District Reserve Guard (DRG) was returning after an anti-Naxalite operation.

"The news of the martyrdom of our 10 DRGsecurity personnel and a driver due to IED blast on the DRG force which had arrived for anti-Naxal operation on the information of the presence of Maoist cadre under Aranpur police station area of Dantewada is very sad. The people of the state pay our respects to them. We all share in the grief of their families. May their souls rest in peace," Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel tweeted.
