Governor Gulab Chand Kataria Stresses on Role of Finance in Assam's Development
The Assam governor reviewed initiatives by state departments, emphasizing on the role of finance in development. He called for collaboration between departments to ensure smooth execution of welfare activities. The governor also stressed on generating additional revenues.
The Governor of Assam, Gulab Chand Kataria, recently conducted a comprehensive review of the initiatives and schemes implemented by the Finance Department, as well as the Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Department. This critical examination was carried out to evaluate their contributions towards the state's growth and development.

During his review, Governor Kataria underscored the significant role played by the Finance Department in fostering economic growth within Assam. He further highlighted that for welfare activities to be executed seamlessly across all sectors of society, there needs to be effective collaboration between this department and other branches of government.
The governor placed particular emphasis on audit recommendations. He pointed out that these recommendations are not only crucial for maintaining financial discipline but also because central funds are disbursed to states based on utilisation certificates issued after audits. Expressing concern over delays in providing these certificates could hinder fund flow from Centre to State; he urged the department officials to exercise utmost diligence in providing these documents within stipulated timelines.
In addition to ensuring efficient use of funds received from Central Government, Governor Kataria also encouraged exploring alternative avenues for generating additional revenues. Such revenue generation would bolster state finances independently while promoting sustainable economic growth.
Finance Minister Outlines Initiatives
Ajanta Neog, Finance Minister gave a brief outline about her departments’ initiatives during this meeting. Additional Chief Secretary Finance Samir Kumar Sinha provided more insight into its activities through a detailed presentation.
Addressing Price Surges
In his interaction with officials from Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Department, Governor Kataria expressed concern over price surges especially during festive seasons. He sought details regarding measures taken by this department aimed at stabilising prices during such periods when demand typically exceeds supply causing an inflationary trend.
Recognizing the importance of a well-structured market system, Governor Kataria emphasized the need for establishing a 'mandi' system. This traditional marketplace would not only ensure fair pricing but also safeguard consumer interests by providing them with an array of choices and promoting competition among sellers.
To conclude, Governor Kataria’s review meeting was a constructive exercise aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of departments that play a key role in Assam's economic development. The governor's emphasis on inter-departmental collaboration, adherence to audit recommendations, timely issuance of utilisation certificates, revenue generation and price stabilisation reiterates his commitment towards fostering inclusive growth within the state.
