Assam Government Bans Beef Consumption In Restaurants And Public Spaces

The Assam government has decided to prohibit the serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public places. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this decision on December 4. The state cabinet meeting led to the amendment of the existing law on beef consumption, introducing new provisions.

During the cabinet meeting, it was determined that beef would no longer be served in any restaurant or hotel across Assam. "In Assam, we have decided that beef will not be served in any restaurant or hotel and also it will not be served in any public function or public place, so from today we have completely decided to stop the consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants and public places. Earlier our decision was to stop eating beef near temples but now we have expanded it to the entire state that you will not be able to eat it in any community place, public place, hotel or restaurant," CM Sarma stated.

Expansion of Infrastructure Projects

In addition to the beef ban, other significant decisions were made during the cabinet meeting. The road connecting Guwahati's Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport to the city will be expanded from four lanes to six lanes. This infrastructure development aims to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion.

Chief Minister Sarma also revealed plans for a cabinet expansion scheduled for December 7. New ministers are expected to take their oaths on this date. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance governance and implement new policies effectively.

Major Development Proposals

While attending meetings in Delhi, Sarma submitted proposals worth Rs 1 lakh crore for approval by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These proposals include increasing Bongaigaon Refinery's capacity to five million tonnes and expanding Namrup fertiliser plant with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore.

An expressway project from Guwahati to Silchar is also planned, passing through Meghalaya at an estimated cost of Rs 25,000 crore. This expressway aims to cut travel time between these cities from 12 hours down to five hours.

Existing Cattle Preservation Laws

The Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 already restricts cattle slaughter and sale for beef in areas mainly inhabited by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. It also prohibits such activities within a five-kilometre radius of temples or satras (Vaishnavite monasteries).

The recent decision extends these restrictions statewide, ensuring no beef is consumed in community spaces or public venues throughout Assam.

This comprehensive approach reflects Assam's commitment to respecting cultural sentiments while pursuing economic development through infrastructure projects.
