Assam Flood: Multiple Landslides Reported From Kamrup District Amid Heavy Rains, 5 Dead

Assam Flood: Continuous heavy rainfall in Assam's Kamrup (Metro) district has resulted in tragic multiple landslides, claiming the lives of at least five individuals, including children, within the last 24 hours. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed these unfortunate incidents in a report early on Saturday. The report further highlighted the impact of urban flooding on three districts - Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Cachar - affecting over 10,150 residents across five revenue circles. The ASDMA has issued warnings of potential additional localised landslides, traffic snarls, and tree falls due to the persistent rainfall.

In Guwahati alone, waterlogging has significantly disrupted daily life, with several areas submerged. Notable among the affected locations are Rukminigaon, Beltola Survey, Hatigaon, Geetanagar, Anil Nagar, Lakhimi Nagar, Jatia, Maligaon, and Panjabari. These developments have prompted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to express concern over the situation's severity during a press briefing at Lok Sewa Bhawan. He indicated that the adverse conditions are expected to persist, attributing the widespread impact to the heavy rains across Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. The state government is keeping a close watch on the evolving scenario.

Community and Government Response to the Weather Crisis

In a move to mitigate the impact on the populace, the Assam government has granted special casual leave on Saturday to all its employees in Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro). Educational establishments will be closed, and private entities are encouraged to take necessary precautions. Despite these measures, local residents express dissatisfaction with the repetitive nature of the flooding issue. One resident lamented the immediate waterlogging caused by even minor rainfall, urging government intervention. Another voiced concerns over the perennial challenges faced during the monsoon season, including vehicle malfunctions and the heightened risk of accidents.

The heavy rainfall affecting Assam is not an isolated incident, with neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya also recording significant downpours. This has exacerbated the flooding in Assam, particularly in Guwahati, where extensive waterlogging has been reported. The weather conditions even disrupted flight operations at Guwahati airport on Friday, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of the continuous rain and gusty winds.

Nearly 2,000 individuals have been affected by the floods, yet no relief camps or distribution centers have been established in the urban areas hit by the flooding. Additionally, a 'ring bandh' under the North Lakhimpur revenue circle has suffered a breach, further complicating the flood management efforts. The absence of immediate relief facilities underscores the challenges facing authorities in providing adequate support to those displaced or endangered by the floods.
