Kerala Congress Leaders Consider Forming New Party, BJP Alliance: Assam CM Sarma

In a significant political development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that discussions were underway with some leaders from the Congress party in Kerala regarding the formation of a new regional political entity. These talks, which took place in Delhi, revolved around the potential alignment of this proposed party with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming 2026 assembly elections in Kerala. However, it was decided to pause these discussions until after the Lok Sabha elections, with intentions to resume post-election.

Kerala Congress Eyes BJP Alliance

During his campaign efforts in Kerala for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates, Sarma shared insights with the Asianet news channel about the ongoing political dialogues. "We had two or three rounds of discussions in Delhi but we decided not to discuss it prior to the Lok Sabha elections. The discussions can be resumed after the Lok Sabha polls. I am sure the discussions will happen after the polls," he remarked, highlighting a strategic pause in political maneuvering ahead of crucial electoral contests.

Furthermore, Sarma emphasized the necessity of a uniform civil code for India at multiple rally events, positioning it as a critical agenda that only Prime Minister Narendra Modi could courageously pursue. He criticized both Congress and Left parties for their apparent lack of initiative in this area. "A uniform civil code is necessary for this country. The Congress and the Left parties do not have the guts to bring a uniform civil code. Only Narendra Modi has the courage to introduce a uniform civil code in this country," Sarma stated at a Kochi rally.

The Assam Chief Minister also addressed allegations and misconceptions surrounding the unrest in Manipur, clarifying that it was a conflict between two communities rather than a religious dispute between Hindus and Christians. Additionally, Sarma took aim at Rahul Gandhi, Wayanad MP, accusing him of instructing Congress workers to refrain from displaying their party flags during his campaign in Wayanad, suggesting a tactical move to avoid escalating tensions with the Muslim League.

Sarma further critiqued Gandhi's approach towards political adversaries and allies alike, citing Gandhi's changing stance towards Arvind Kejriwal following his arrest as indicative of opportunistic politics. He questioned Gandhi's earlier demands for arrests of political figures like Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on allegations of misconduct.

The political landscape in Kerala is set for an intriguing phase as these developments unfold, especially with the Lok Sabha seats polling scheduled for April 26. The discussions between Kerala's Congress leaders and Sarma hint at potential realignments and new political formations aiming to challenge existing power structures in the state's politics by 2026.
