The Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony that celebrated the remarkable achievements of athletes and showcased China's cultural heritage.

HISTORICALLY, INDIA'S BEST-EVER PERFORMANCE IN ASIAN GAMES TILL NOW:

At the 19th edition of the Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, Indian athletes showcased an exceptional performance characterized by determination and excellence. India's contingent of 655 participants achieved an astonishing feat, securing a total of 107 medals, surpassing their previous record of 70 medals set in Jakarta in 2018.

India's remarkable medal tally included 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze medals, a significant improvement compared to the 70 medals won by a smaller 570-athlete team four years ago. India's contribution to the medal count was particularly notable, as only four nations managed to cross the 100-medal mark in Hangzhou.

Indian shooters were among the standout performers, claiming a total of 22 medals, including seven golds. Athletics also had its moment of glory, with Neeraj Chopra successfully defending his javelin throw title. In total, track and field events contributed six gold, 14 silver, and nine bronze medals to India's tally.

Archery added another feather to India's cap, as the compound team secured all five gold medals available in their category. The cricket and kabaddi teams continued the gold rush, with each winning two gold medals. The men's hockey team not only brought home the gold but also secured coveted spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In badminton, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy's victory marked India's inaugural men's doubles gold at the Games. India's gold medal count was further bolstered by successes in squash, tennis, and equestrian events. Both the men's and women's cricket teams clinched gold medals.

However, the significance of Hangzhou extended beyond the medal count. The event served as a gateway to the Paris 2024 Olympics, offering 74 quotas across various sports. India secured six of these quotas, with boxing leading the way.

Athletes such as Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, Parveen Hooda, and Lovlina Borgohain earned their tickets to Paris. Athletics and men's hockey also contributed to India's strong representation in the French capital, ensuring that the nation will be well-represented at the upcoming Olympic Games.

A VIBRANT CLOSING CEREMONY:

The event, held at the 'Big Lotus' Stadium with a capacity of 80,000, captivated spectators with a 75-minute spectacle of lights, sounds, and lasers. Athletes from the 45 participating countries bid farewell, marking the end of over two weeks of intense sporting competition.

The closing ceremony was a fusion of sports and culture, aiming to create a harmonious blend of 'Culture and Sports.'

Acting chief of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Randhir Singh, officially declared the 19th edition of the Asian Games closed in the presence of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and other dignitaries.

Singh stated, "I declare the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games closed and, following tradition, call upon the youth of Asia to gather in three years' time in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, to celebrate the 20th Asian Games, per the ideals of the Olympic Council of Asia. May the youth of Asia continue to celebrate the Asian Games in the spirit of brotherhood and for the betterment of humanity."

The 19th Asian Games, which commenced in 1951 in New Delhi, India, served as a celebration for Hangzhou, a bustling city of 10 million, home to Alibaba's headquarters, and situated adjacent to the sprawling metropolis of Shanghai.

Spokesperson Xu Deqing expressed satisfaction with the games, stating, "We have achieved the goal of streamlined, safe, and spectacular games." It was reported in state media that approximately $30 billion was spent in preparation for the games.
