As schools reopen in Chennai, weathermen predict more rains for the city

On Tuesday, schools reopened in Chennai after being closed for almost a week due to rains in the city and neighbouring areas.

Chennai, Nov 7: Finally, schools reopened in Chennai on Tuesday, after being closed for several days as a precautionary measure to avoid children getting into any trouble due to the current rain spell in the city and neighbouring areas.

Since last Tuesday, local administration decided to keep schools closed in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur as rain badly battered several parts of Tamil Nadu in the last few days.

However, looking at the weather report it seems that the administration probably acted in a hurry by deciding to reopen schools as more rains are predicted in Chennai in the coming few hours.

"Just as schools started working in Chennai, #ChennaiRains2017 seem to say Dont forget me. Fresh bands approaching from East, could give more rains to many areas of the city. Heaviest Rains to the South of Chennai," tweeted @ChennaiRains, an independent weather blogging community from Chennai, on Tuesday morning.

Some western suburbs of the city received sharp showers on Tuesday early morning.

The North-East monsoon, which set in on October 27, has been active over Tamil Nadu, with Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts receiving heavy rains since last week.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reviewed the situation arising out of heavy rains and floods in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu and assured the state government of all possible assistance from the Centre in tackling the problem.

Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam have bore the brunt of the monsoon fury, with torrential rains inundating low-lying areas. Nine people died across the state in the recent spell of heavy rain.

"I assure all possible support to the Tamil Nadu government to tackle the situation due to rains," Modi said at a function to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Tamil daily Dina Thanthi in the city.

The prime minister expressed grief over the rain-related deaths over the last few days.

"On landing in Chennai, PM @narendramodi discussed the situation arising due to heavy rains and floods in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu with the CM (K Palaniswami) & Dy CM (O Panneerselvam) of the state. He assured them of all assistance from the Centre," @PMOIndia, the official twitter handle of Prime Minister's Office, said in a tweet.

The last time when Chennai saw so much rainfall was during the 2015 South India floods which created havoc across the city and the state. At least 500 people died during the 2015 South India floods.
