Army Design Bureau: Powering India’s Defence Future through Strategic Innovation and Collaboration
At a time when national security hinges increasingly on technological edge, the Army Design Bureau (ADB) is reshaping the defence innovation landscape with a determined push toward self-reliance. Established to bridge the gap between the military, academia, startups, and private industry, the ADB has emerged as a linchpin in India's quest for cutting-edge defence solutions. As of April 2025, with the Ministry of Defence declaring this the 'Year of Reforms,' the ADB's role in fostering collaboration has never been more critical or inspiring. This is not just about meeting the Army's needs but redefining how India secures its future.
The ADB's mandate is clear: harness the collective genius of India's technological ecosystem to deliver tailor-made solutions for the Indian Army. From advanced weaponry to next-generation drones, the bureau is spearheading over 350 defence programs in collaboration with 450 Indian companies, both public and private. Take, for instance, the development of indigenous swarm drone technology-a game-changer in modern warfare.

These autonomous systems, capable of overwhelming enemy defences, are a testament to how the ADB's partnerships with startups and premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are yielding battlefield-ready innovations. In a world where conflicts increasingly spill into cyber and aerial domains, such advancements signal India's readiness to lead, not follow.
Collaboration is the heartbeat of the ADB's success. Unlike the traditional model where the Army relied solely on the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) or public sector undertakings, the bureau has flipped the script. It positions the Army as an active participant in the R&D process, working hand-in-hand with private players and academic minds.
A standout example is the partnership with Bhubaneswar-based startup BonV Aero, which set a world record by deploying fully autonomous logistics drones capable of carrying 30-kilogram payloads at 19,024 feet in the Himalayas. Supporting Indian Army operations in treacherous terrain, this feat showcases how nimble startups, backed by the ADB, are solving real-world military challenges while putting India on the global innovation map.
What makes the ADB genuinely remarkable is its ability to tap into India's startup ecosystem, now the world's third-largest. With over 500 startups working under initiatives like Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), the bureau is nurturing a culture of ingenuity. Companies like ZUPPA Geo Navigation Technologies, which is in talks with the Army to deploy its Suraksha Edge Monitoring Device for drone cybersecurity, exemplify this synergy.
In an age of drone swarms and cyber threats, securing unmanned systems is non-negotiable, and the ADB's backing of homegrown solutions aligns perfectly with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. This is not just about defence-it's about building a technological backbone for the nation.
Army Design Bureau has also facilitated Private Industries, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), and startups in the internal evaluation of their products. In the last year, more than ten such facilitations have been organised in various Commands. For instance, drones, perimeter intrusion systems, and weapon-locating radars are some of the technologies that have been facilitated. This has helped the industries refine their products and prepare better when procurement cases are initiated.
Naturally, challenges remain, but the ADB's proactive approach is steadily overcoming funding constraints and bureaucratic hurdles, paving the way for sustained progress. By aligning with the Defence Ministry's reform agenda, it streamlines procurement and fosters operational readiness. The ripple effects are profound: jobs are being created, industries are thriving, and India's defence exports are soaring. As the ADB drives cutting-edge innovations, it shows that this is not just about weapons. It is about securing a nation's sovereignty and pride.
The Army Design Bureau is a beacon of India's ambition in a multipolar world where power hinges on innovation. It's not merely adapting to change; it's shaping it. Through collaboration with technological institutions, startups, and private industry, the ADB is crafting a military that's not just equipped for today but poised to dominate tomorrow. For a nation on the rise, this is more than defence-it is its destiny.
