Diwali with Ariha: Indian Embassy Celebrates with Baby Girl in German Foster Care
Indian officials in Berlin celebrated Diwali with Ariha Shah, a baby girl living in German foster care for over two years. India advocates for her swift return, stressing the importance of her cultural upbringing.
Indian officials in Berlin celebrated Diwali last month with baby girl Ariha Shah, who has been living in a foster care in the German capital for over two years. Ariha was placed in the custody of Germany's Youth Welfare Office Jugendamt on September 23, 2021, after the then seven-month-old baby suffered an accidental injury. She has been in foster care since then.

Consular Access Granted
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi announced on Friday that consular access was granted to the child in the second week of last month and that Indian embassy officials celebrated Diwali with her. India has been advocating for Ariha's early return to India, emphasizing the significance of her being immersed in her linguistic, religious, cultural, and social environment.
Efforts for Cultural Immersion
Bagchi highlighted the importance of Ariha's cultural immersion and mentioned that resource materials related to Indian festivals, customs, and practices were handed over to the German authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India in Berlin have been persistently working towards safeguarding Ariha's cultural, national identity, and rights, with the ultimate goal of ensuring her return to India.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party's Allegations
In response to allegations made by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party regarding India's interference in the country's polls, Bagchi reiterated India's consistent position. He emphasized that the elections are an internal matter of Bangladesh and that the people of Bangladesh have the right to determine their own future. India, as a close friend and partner of Bangladesh, desires peaceful elections and will continue to support Bangladesh's progress and development.
Chinese Research Vessel in Sri Lanka
Regarding reports of a Chinese research vessel visiting Sri Lanka, Bagchi stated that India closely monitors developments that have an impact on national security and takes necessary measures accordingly.
The Indian government remains committed to protecting the rights and well-being of Ariha Shah and ensuring her return to India. India's diplomatic efforts and engagement with German authorities demonstrate its dedication to safeguarding Ariha's cultural identity and ensuring her best interests are met.
