The Economic Survey has laid out three key recommendations for social media companies that could significantly change how the internet functions for minors in India.

Strict age verification

Social media platforms may be required to ensure that children below a specified age, likely 13 or 15 years, cannot access their services.

Default child-safe settings

If a teenager uses social media, the app's settings must be privacy-first by default. These settings should not be easily altered by the child.

Algorithm-level changes

Platforms would need to redesign their algorithms to prevent children from being exposed to violent, objectionable, or anxiety-inducing content.

Why the Government Feels Digital Addiction Needs Urgent Control

According to the survey, social media has moved beyond entertainment and is increasingly resembling a mental health crisis. Experts warn that excessive screen time is linked to irritability, sleep deprivation, reduced attention span, and symptoms similar to ADHD among children.

There is also a growing threat of cyberbullying and online fraud, with minors being especially vulnerable. Additionally, increased screen dependency has sharply reduced children's participation in outdoor activities and sports, impacting their physical and social development.

Tech Companies to Face Greater Accountability

The government believes responsibility can no longer rest solely with parents. Technology companies will be expected to develop reliable tools to accurately verify users' ages.

Several developed countries already enforce restrictions on social media use for children under 13, either through outright bans or mandatory parental consent. India is now preparing to follow a similar global path.

Challenges Ahead and the Role of Parents

Experts point out that one of the biggest challenges will be children creating accounts using false age details. To address this, schools must strengthen digital literacy programmes, while parents need to enforce clear screen-time rules at home.

However, specialists caution against extreme restrictions. Excessive control could push children towards unsafe or obscure platforms, including dark web applications. Instead, experts recommend a balanced approach, offering guidance without complete freedom or total prohibition.
