Are You Brahmin? Which Cream You Apply? Bengal Medical Student Alleges Improper Viva Questions, Discrimination

A West Bengal government medical college and hospital is facing criticism for allegedly asking inappropriate questions during a viva examination. A video shared by the media-in-charge of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the state, on X, shows students protesting over the questions asked.

In the video, a woman from Sagar Dutt Medical College mentions that male candidates before and after her had short viva rounds. However, she was asked about her family members at home and then questioned, "Are you a Brahmin? Which cream do you apply to your face?" She was also reportedly asked, "What do you put on your lips?"

Student Protests Over Inappropriate Questions

The video shows students expressing outrage over the incident, seemingly confronting the administration. DH could not independently verify the video. This controversy follows recent vandalism at the institution, with the principal stating that 'some students, outsiders created ruckus', according to ABP.

The vandalism reportedly occurred during a college council meeting where authorities were discussing issues with protesting students on campus. The unrest was linked to ongoing protests over hostel availability and allotment.

Context of Recent Unrest

The ruckus took place amid ongoing protests over the R G Kar rape and murder case. Yesterday marked a month since the horrific incident where a trainee doctor was found killed in a government-run institution in Kolkata.

Sharing the video of student outrage over viva questions, VHP member Sourish Mukherjee claimed that the TMC ecosystem is now 'desperate' to 'oppress top Hindu merits of West Bengal'. He urged all 'nationalists' to act 'legally, socially and intellectually against this ecology', warning that otherwise 'we are all doomed'.

This incident has sparked significant debate and concern among students and faculty alike. The allegations have raised questions about fairness and propriety in academic evaluations.

The situation remains tense as more details emerge about both the inappropriate questioning and recent acts of vandalism at Sagar Dutt Medical College. Authorities are expected to address these issues promptly to restore order and trust within the institution.
