Bhojshala Was Saraswati Temple, Court Decision Must Be Respected: KK Muhammed

In a significant development from Gwalior on March 24, renowned archaeologist K.K. Muhammed has made a compelling assertion regarding the Bhojshala/Kamal Maula Mosque complex in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district. According to Muhammed, the site originally served as a Saraswati temple before its conversion into an Islamic place of worship. Amidst ongoing disputes, he emphasized the importance of adhering to the court's decision and respecting the Places of Worship Act, 1991, urging Hindus and Muslims to resolve their differences amicably.

Bhojshala: A Saraswati Temple

Muhammed, a former official of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and a Padma Shri awardee, highlighted the historical significance of the site. He pointed out that the complex was undoubtedly a Saraswati temple, based on historical facts. The ASI is currently conducting a survey of the disputed complex following directives from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, with the investigation reaching its third day on Sunday.

The Places of Worship Act, 1991 plays a crucial role in this debate, setting 1947 as the cut-off year to determine the nature of such disputed sites. "If it was a temple in 1947 then it is a temple and if it was a mosque, then it is a mosque," Muhammed stated, clarifying the legal stance on such matters.

Furthermore, Muhammed drew parallels between the significance of Mathura and Kashi for Hindus to that of Mecca and Madinah for Muslims. He suggested that while Hindu sacred sites are irreplaceable due to their association with deities, mosques lacking direct ties to Prophet Mohammed or aulias could potentially be relocated to resolve disputes.

The ASI's survey comes in response to a High Court directive issued on March 11, mandating a scientific examination of the Bhojshala complex within six weeks. This medieval-era monument has been at the center of religious contention, with Hindus allowed to worship there every Tuesday and Muslims permitted to offer namaz on Fridays, as per an ASI order dated April 7, 2003.

Muhammed's involvement in archaeological excavations is notable, having been part of Professor B.B. Lal's team during the first Ayodhya excavation in 1976-77. His insights into these sensitive matters stem from a deep understanding of India's rich historical tapestry and its impact on contemporary religious dynamics.

In his appeal for peace and mutual respect, Muhammed cautioned against actions that could exacerbate tensions between communities. He advocated for dialogue and cooperation to find lasting solutions to these disputes, underscoring the need for unity in strengthening the nation.

This call for harmony comes at a critical time when both communities are urged to reflect on their shared history and work towards fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding. The outcome of the ASI's survey and subsequent court decisions will be pivotal in determining the future of the Bhojshala/Kamal Maula Mosque complex and potentially setting a precedent for similar disputes across India.
