Apni Party to Contest with 'Bat' Symbol in 2024 Lok Sabha Polls in J-K
In a significant development for the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission (EC) has allocated the bat symbol to the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, led by former minister Altaf Bukhari, for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This decision comes after the withdrawal of the bat symbol from the Sanyogwadi Party, marking a pivotal moment for Bukhari's party in the Union Territory.

The EC's communication to the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir outlined that the bat symbol is exclusively assigned to the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party for the upcoming general elections. However, it emphasized that the party's entitlement to this common symbol would cease upon the conclusion of the electoral process.
Expressing his contentment with this development, Bukhari highlighted the symbolic significance of the bat to the region. He associated it with Kashmir's renowned willow cricket bat-making industry, optimistically stating that it embodies their confidence in achieving electoral success in Jammu and Kashmir.
Furthermore, the EC clarified that it has retracted its previous allocation of the Hockey and Ball symbol to the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party for these elections. Instead, candidates from this registered unrecognised political party will now campaign under the bat symbol in all remaining phases of the General Election to Lok Sabha, 2024, within Jammu and Kashmir. This decision is grounded in Para 10B of the Symbols Order, 1968.
The commission also detailed conditions under Para 13 of the Election Symbols Reservation and Allotment Order, 1968. It stated that if the Apni Party fails to field candidates in at least two parliamentary constituencies within the state or Union Territory, they would forfeit their right to use the bat symbol. This stipulation underscores the procedural requirements political parties must meet to maintain their allocated symbols.
This allocation of symbols is a crucial aspect of India's electoral process, providing parties with a means of identification that resonates with voters. For the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, securing the bat symbol represents not only a strategic advantage but also a deeper connection with local culture and industry.
