Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu Launches ₹2.5 Lakh Universal Health Coverage Scheme

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced the launch of the Universal Health Coverage Scheme, a major initiative aimed at providing comprehensive health insurance to every resident of the state. Under this scheme, each individual in Andhra Pradesh will receive health insurance coverage of ₹2.5 lakh, while families living below the poverty line (BPL) will be eligible for additional medical assistance of up to ₹25 lakh.

The initiative forms a vital part of the Sanjeevani Project, which seeks to provide accessible and quality healthcare services to all citizens, regardless of their location. As part of the project, the medical records of over six crore residents will be digitized. The Andhra Pradesh government has also partnered with the Bill Gates Foundation for technology and knowledge transfer through a pilot program that is currently underway.

The Universal Health Coverage Scheme is expected to benefit around five crore people in the state. Insurance companies will provide coverage ranging from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh, while the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Trust will extend additional support up to ₹25 lakh for poor families. Approvals for treatment will be granted within six hours of hospital admission, and a central control center will monitor healthcare delivery and ensure efficiency.

In a parallel effort to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and education, the Andhra Pradesh government has also approved the establishment of ten new medical colleges under a public-private partnership model. These new colleges are expected to begin admitting students by the 2027-28 academic year.

The Universal Health Coverage Scheme marks a major milestone in Andhra Pradesh's healthcare reform, reflecting Chief Minister Naidu's vision to make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all residents of the state.
