Andhra Pradesh Government Revises Admission Rules, Eliminates Non-Local Quota for Students from Other States
The Andhra Pradesh government has revised its admission policies for higher education, eliminating the 15% non-local reservation. Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, only students from Andhra Pradesh will be eligible for these seats. This change affects admissions to various courses, including engineering, pharmacy, and law. Students from other states, such as Telangana, will no longer have access to the non-local quota.

New Admission Rules for Andhra Pradesh Students
The government aims to safeguard the interests of local students in undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs. A recent order stated that the previous common admission process with Telangana ended on June 2, 2024. This process had been in place for a decade following the bifurcation of united Andhra Pradesh. The order highlighted the need to revise admission rules across numerous courses.
The decision to amend these rules came after receiving multiple requests from parents and students. They sought fair treatment for Andhra Pradesh students and wanted to avoid legal issues in the admission process. The new rules ensure that 85% of seats are reserved for local candidates, while the remaining 15% are available under the non-local quota.
Impact on Statewide Universities
For statewide universities not affiliated with Andhra University (AU) or SV University, 85% of seats will be reserved for local students. These seats will be distributed between AU and SV University jurisdictions at 65.6% and 34.3%, respectively. The remaining 15% non-local seats will follow a similar distribution formula as AU and SV University.
Students from districts like Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, and others fall under AU's jurisdiction but are considered non-local by SV University. Conversely, students from Anantapur, Kurnool, Chittoor, Kadapa, and Nellore are under SV University's jurisdiction but treated as non-local by AU.
The revised rules aim to provide clarity and fairness in admissions while addressing concerns raised by stakeholders. By reserving more seats for local students, the government hopes to enhance educational opportunities for those within Andhra Pradesh.
